Anderson, CN girls golf win season-opening event

August 10, 2014
Columbus North High School

GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Senior Sydney Anderson fired a 71 on Saturday (Aug. 9), leading the Columbus North girls golf team to the championship of the Greensburg Invitational.
Sophomore Holly Anderson added an 80 to place fourth individually and help the Bull Dogs to a 335 total, nine strokes better than runner-up Columbus East. Batesville placed third in the 18-team competition with a 368 at Greensburg Country Club.
Freshman Danbi Kim shot an 88 and tied for seventh as an individual, while sophomore Aubrey Smith shot a 96 to complete the CN scorers. Senior Madissen Pearson rounded out the Columbus North lineup with a 100. Senior Rachel Davis played an unofficial round and carded a 97.
Individually, Batesville's Madison McCreary was second with a 75. She was followed by Columbus East's Rebecca Smith with a 79, Holly Anderson and Columbus East's Abby Frazier with an 83.
"I was real excited to see how the girls would respond with it being their first meet of the season," Columbus North coach Scott Seavers told The Republic. "Sydney came in extremely strong and battled well, and everyone played extremely well after a sort of bumpy front nine."
Sydney Anderson said she knows she can play better.
"I had an up-and-down day," she told the newspaper. "At the ninth hole, I hit two trees and ended up bogeying two straight holes. But I was able to bounce back and get a decent score in the end."
Holly Anderson, Sydney's sister, said she has areas that need work.
"You always can do better," Holly said. "I need to work on my tee shots and be able to shoot in the 70s. But that comes in time, so there's much to improve on."
Seavers also noted areas that need attention, but he overall was pleased with the effort.
"We had points where we had shots get away from us," Seavers said. "There were moments where we three-putted where we shouldn't have, but we know we can fix those little issues."
Columbus North returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Monday (Aug. 11) when it hosts Perry Meridian at Harrison Lake Country Club. The Bull Dogs follow with a match at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday (Aug. 12) against Southport at Southern Dunes Golf Course in Indianapolis. They compete in the Fuzzy Zoeller Invitational at 2 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 16) at Champions Pointe Golf Club in Henryville.
