Welmer to play basketball at Maine prep school in 2014-15
August 1, 2014Columbus North High School
Columbus North graduate Elliott Welmer has decided to attend Bridgton Academy in North Bridgton, Maine, for the 2014-15 academic year.
Welmer, a 6-9 forward who has committed to the Saint Louis University men's basketball program, will reclassify as a class of 2015 college prospect by attending the prep school for a year. He expects to sign a national letter of intent with SLU in November, then join the Billikens with four years of eligibility beginning in 2015-16.
At Columbus North, Welmer averaged 15.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 blocks while helping the Bull Dogs to a 20-6 record as a senior in 2013-14. He converted 61 percent of his field goal attempts and made 62 percent on his free throws en route to being chosen first-team all-Conference Indiana.
Welmer also was selected honorable mention IBCA/Subway Senior All-State and high honorable mention All-State by the Associated Press. In the postseason, he was picked to play in Hoosier Basketball Magazine's Top 60 Senior Workout, the North-South Indiana All-Star Classic and the "Hoosiers" Reunion All-Star Classic.
At Bridgton Academy, Welmer will play for a program where former Indiana high school players Robert Vaden (Pike) and Mike Davis Jr. (Bloomington North) once played before moving onto four-year college programs. Whit Lesure is the coach at Bridgton Academy.
