The Columbus North volleyball team defeated Edinburgh 2-0 and Hauser 2-1 on Wednesday evening (July 9) to capture the championship of the Edinburgh Summer League Tournament.
The tourney title capped an undefeated run through the league for the Bull Dogs, who prevailed in eight matches over several weeks.
In league play, CN defeated Hauser (2-0), Jennings County (2-0), Decatur Central (2-0), Edinburgh (2-0), Indian Creek (2-0) and Trinity Lutheran (2-1). The Bull Dogs followed with wins over the Lancers and Jets for the tournament crown.
Players who represented Columbus North in the tournament were middle hitters Makinsey Summa, Anne Marie Kiel and Chase Leslie; outside hitters Janelle Peters and Maliah Howard-Bass; right-side hitters Hannah Weaver and Emily Pollitt; setter Hannah McKinney; libero Alexa Pelley; and defensive specialists Grace Sonderman, Sarah Boldrey, Makinsey Rooks and Kennedy Staggs.
Senior setter Karen Wildemann and junior middle hitter Avery Wendel did not compete in this league because of their club volleyball schedules and competing in Nationals. Senior Hannah Vittorio did not play because of injury.
"I did not take stats for this tourney, but I would like to mention players who excelled were seniors Makinsey Summa, Janelle Peters and Alexa Pelley, junior Hannah McKinney and sophomore Maliah Howard-Bass," CN coach Caitlin Greiner said.
"This was a great league to compete in and see different girls playing different positions. Everyone played very well and worked hard throughout the entire league. It is an exciting start to what I see being a very exciting season."
Columbus North volleyball begins official practice for the 2014 season on Aug. 4. The team will host Bloomington South in a preseason scrimmage on Aug. 14. The competition season begins on Aug. 21 with a home match against Shelbyville.
