Fairbanks, VanDeventer named co-MVPs of Columbus North boys golf

    Columbus North seniors Christian Fairbanks and Michael VanDeventer were recognized as co-MVPs of the Bull Dogs' 2014 boys golf team at the season-ending banquet Thursday evening (June 19) at the Columbus City Hall banquet room.
    VanDeventer and Fairbanks finished as co-medalists in the IHSAA state meet with 141 totals. Together, they led Columbus North to the state championship with a team score of 591.
    For the season, VanDeventer averaged 72.83 strokes in 18 18-hole rounds with a best of 69. Fairbanks averaged 74.27 strokes in 18 18-hole rounds with a best of 69.
    Earlier in the season, VanDeventer was medalist at the Spring Preview, the Warsaw Invitational, the Crooked Stick Invitational and the Greensburg Sectional. Fairbanks was medalist at the Bloomington North Invitational and the Providence Regional, while senior Nick Waskom was medalist at the Seymour Invitational.
    Waskom averaged 77.88 in 18 18-hole rounds with a best of 72.
    Others receiving special honors were Fairbanks and senior Ian Coffey. Fairbanks was presented the team's Bull Dog Award, while Coffey received the team's Most Improved Award. Coffey averaged 79.11 in 18 18-hole rounds with a best of 74.
    Fairbanks and VanDeventer were recognized as all-state players, while VanDeventer was honored as the IHSAA's Mental Attitude Award winner.
    Fairbanks, VanDeventer and Coffey each earned first-team all-Conference Indiana accolades.
    Five Columbus North seniors plan to play golf in college -- Fairbanks at Indiana University, VanDeventer at Ball State, Waskom at Taylor University, Coffey at the University of Saint Francis and Zack Lee at Huntington University.
    Those presented with varsity letters were seniors Jake Armuth, Ian Coffey, Christian Fairbanks, Zack Lee, Michael VanDeventer and Nick Waskom; juniors Devin Abendroth, Conner Hayes, Kyung Kim and Connor Opalka; sophomore Jared Imlay, and freshman Spencer Fairbanks.
    JV awards went to sophomore Zach Whisman and freshmen Zach Schiavello, Bryce Turner and Matt Vorndran.
