June 18, 2014
Columbus North High School

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Seniors Christian Fairbanks and Michael VanDeventer each fired a 3-under-par 141 over two rounds that finished Wednesday (June 18), sharing individual medalist honors and leading the Columbus North boys golf team to the 2014 IHSAA state championship.
Fairbanks shot a second-round 70 to go with his opening round 71, while VanDeventer tallied a second-round 71 after a first-round 70 as the Bull Dogs' duo became the first players from the same school to share individual honors in the 78 years of the tournament.
Together, they led Columbus North to a 299-292--591 team total at The Legends of Indiana Golf Club. Senior Ian Coffey added a 77-76--153, while classmate Nick Waskom carded an 81-75--156 to complete the top four as Columbus North won the school's 35th IHSAA championship in all sports and its second in boys golf to join a previous title in 1934.
Senior Zack Lee rounded out the Bull Dogs' lineup with an 85-89--174.
Defending champion Westfield finished as the team runner-up with a 602, one stroke better than Hamilton Southeastern and two better than Carmel and Pendleton Heights. Center Grove was sixth with a 612 followed by Fort Wayne Dwenger at 613, Bloomington South at 627, Yorktown at 628 and NorthWood at 636.
Individually, Evansville Central senior Dylan Meyer placed third with a 70-72--142, while Mishawaka Marian senior Michael Makris was fourth with a 75-68--143. Carmel senior Jake Brown, Westfield sophomore Johnny Deck, Pendleton Heights senior Trevar Denney and Corydon Central juniors Mitchell Frederick and Tim Wiseman tied for fifth place at 145.
VanDeventer capped his day when he was selected as the winner of the IHSAA's Fred A. Keesling Mental Attitude Award.
VanDeventer ended his high school career with four straight top 20 finishes at the state finals and previously helped Columbus North to team finishes of second, fourth and second in the previous three seasons. He ranks among the top 15 percent of students in his senior class academically, and he will attend Ball State University to study Exercise Science and play for the golf team.
