CN's Speidel, Patberg help Indiana Juniors complete double sweep

June 8, 2014
Columbus North High School

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Columbus North's Josh Speidel scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds Saturday night (June 7), helping the IndyStar.com Indiana Junior All-Stars boys to a 113-101 victory over Kentucky in the finale of a basketball doubleheader at Paul Laurence Dunbar High School.
That boys' win came after CN's Ali Patberg contributed six points and a game-high five assists to help the Indiana Junior girls to an 84-61 triumph over Kentucky.
Jordan Geist of Penn dropped in a team-high 19 points, while K.J. Walton of Brownsburg added 17 points and Speidel tallied 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting for the Indiana boys, who improved their record to 5-1 in the third year of the Junior series with Kentucky.
Harris Brown of Indianapolis Howe contributed 14 points, while Davon Dillard of Bowman Academy had 12 points for the winners. James Bolden of Holmes topped Kentucky with 21 points. Ray Spaulding of Louisville Trinity tallied 16 points and Jaqualis Matlock of Hopkinsville netted 15 points in support of Bolden.
The teams battled throughout the first half with a layup by Evansville Memorial's Adam Eberhard giving Indiana a 53-50 edge at intermission.
The back-and-forth struggle continued until near the 11-minute mark when a layup by Corydon Central's Bronson Kessinger and followed by a layup, two free throws and another layup by Walton triggered a 23-8 burst that gave the Hoosiers a 95-82 lead with 5:30 to go.
Kentucky momentarily got back in the game with a four-point play by Matt Rose of Lexington Christian Academy and a turnaround jumper by Matlock. But Indiana countered with a Brown jumper, a Speidel layup and a Geist 3-pointer to regain control. A Speidel three-point play and Dillard dunk then ended any remaining doubt.
Kessinger led Indiana with seven rebounds, while Richmond's Joel Okafor contributed a game-high six assists. Kentucky's Aric Holman of Owensboro grabbed a game-best 12 rebounds, while Bolden and Bardstown's Eljay Cowherd shared team assist honors with four apiece.
Earlier, Jordan Hankins of Lawrence North scored 13 points and Lamina Cooper of Lawrence North chipped in 12 points as Indiana overcame a 37-33 halftime deficit to improve its record to 6-0 in the girls' series.
Jenna Allen of Bedford North Lawrence contributed nine points and a team-high 11 rebounds, while Tori Schickel of Evansville Mater Dei also had nine points. Dominique McBryde of Bedford North Lawrence and Olivia Crozier each tallied eight points for the winners.
Reauna Cleaver of Elizabethtown produced game highs of 16 points and 14 rebounds for Kentucky. Morgan Turner of Meade County supporter Cleaver with 11 points, while Alexis Robinson of Ashland had a team-high four assists.
A Cooper jumper, a Hankins 3-pointer and a Cooper steal and layup helped the Indiana girls grab a lead early in the second half, but Kentucky countered to tie the game at 43 when Cleaver converted back-to-back shots from short range.
Indiana, however, then went on a game-closing 41-18 burst -- two free throws by Merrillville's Victoria Gaines, a Crozier jumper and a Patberg steal and layup igniting the game-turning flurry. An Allen turnaround jumper, a Gaines steal and layup and a bucket by Pike's Brittany Ward helped push the lead to double figures, and the Hoosiers were not threatened again.
A night earlier, the Indiana boys won 127-104 and the Hoosier girls prevailed 98-67.
Next week, the Indiana Junior All-Stars will play the Indiana Senior All-Stars in a pair of girl-boy doubleheaders -- at 6 p.m. Monday at Logansport High School and at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Columbus North High School.
The Indiana Senior All-Stars will face Kentucky in another set of doubleheaders -- at 5:30 p.m. June 13 at Transylvania University's Clive Beck Center in Lexington and at 5 p.m. June 14 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
