EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Ryan Parker hit a roller down the third-base line in the ninth inning to drive in Ben Bunch on Saturday (June 7), lifting the Castle baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Columbus North in the semifinals of the Evansville Regional.
The decision ended a terrific season for the Class 4A No. 6 Bull Dogs, who closed their season with a 23-6-1 record.
Sophomore Brice McDaniel went 4-for-4 with a double and triple to pace a 12-hit attack for Columbus North, while junior Evan Finke was 3-for-4 and junior Devin Mann went 2-for-4. But the Bull Dogs were unable to get a run across when they needed it most at historic Bosse Field.
Mann scored the game's first run when he singled in the first inning, moved to second on a ground out and came around on a Finke single.
Castle tied the game in the bottom of second when it combined two hit batsmen, a Bunch single and a bases-loaded walk to Larkin Helt for a run.
The Knights went ahead 2-1 in the fifth when Helt reached second on a two-base error, moved to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Korbin Williams.
CN drew even in the sixth when Finke singled and McDaniel followed with an RBI triple to center field.
Neither team scored in the seventh or eighth innings, setting the stage for the ninth.
Bunch began the rally with a one-out infield single. One out later, Helt singled and then Jeff Wetzler drew a walk to load the bases. Parker followed with a dribbler that was good enough to bring in Bunch and send the Bull Dogs home heart-broken.
Junior Cody Burton allowed two runs and just three hits over five innings for Columbus North. Sophomore Collin Lollar relieved and was charged with the loss, yielding one run and three hits in 3.2 innings. Castle used three hurlers, Terron Mullikon pitching a scoreless ninth inning to pick up the win.
Whiteland defeated Jeffersonville 5-4 in the other regional semifinal, and Castle knocked off Whiteland 2-1 for the regional championship. The Knights (24-8) advance to the Jasper Semistate, where they will face Terre Haute North (24-7) next Saturday (June 14).
