ST. LEON, Ind. -- Sophomore Hunter Liggett stroked a two-run double in the sixth inning Monday (June 2), lifting the Columbus North baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Bloomington South for the championship of the East Central Sectional.
Sophomore Canaan Baum added two RBIs for the Class 4A No. 6 Bull Dogs (23-5-1), who captured the program's 12th sectional but first since 1995.
Columbus North earned a spot in the Evansville Regional, where it will face Castle (22-8) in the second semifinal on Saturday (June 7). Jeffersonville (22-7) and the winner of the Whiteland Sectional will play in the first game at noon EDT (11 a.m. CDT). The semifinal winners will play for the regional title at 8 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. CDT) Saturday.
In the sectional final, Liggett snapped a 3-3 tie when he doubled to center field to drive home sophomore Brice McDaniel and senior Will Dorenbusch. McDaniel was hit by a pitch to open the inning. Dorenbusch followed with a single, and the runners moved to second and third on a passed ball before Liggett's game-winning hit.
The Bull Dogs took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning when Liggett singled and sophomore Collin Lollar doubled him to third. Junior Devin Mann was intentially walked, and Baum then singled in two runs with Mann going to third on a play when Baum was thrown out at second. Mann then scored on a passed ball before the inning ended.
Bloomington South (19-8) countered with three runs in the bottom of the fifth against Lollar. Jordan Parrott singled one run in, Cole McNeely doubled a run home and Rex McHaley singled in a run to force a deadlock going into the sixth inning.
Lollar, who allowed just five hits, retired the side in order in the sixth and seventh innings. He notched two strikeouts and a lineout in the sixth, then enduced three consecutive ground outs in the seventh to end the game.
    The 2014 sectional crown adds to a Columbus North baseball history that includes 11 previous titles. The earlier sectional championships came in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1994 and 1995. The Bull Dogs have won regionals in 1967, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1981 and 1990.
