ST. LEON, Ind. -- Junior Cody Burton hurled a two-hit shutout Friday night (May 30), lifting the Class 4A No. 6 Columbus North baseball team to a 2-0 victory over Bloomington North in a Sectional 14 semifinal at East Central.
Sophomore Collin Lollar and junior Devin Mann knocked in runs for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 22-5-1 and earned a date in the sectional final at 6:30 p.m. Monday (June 2) against Bloomington South (19-7).
The Panthers reached the finals with a 6-5 victory over Columbus East in the first semifinal on Friday.
In the second game, Burton was masterful in limiting the Cougars to two hits while striking out 10 and walking just one. And his teammates got him all the runs that CN would need in the second inning.
Senior Will Dorenbusch opened the rally with a single, and he moved to third on a double by freshman Cooper Trinkle. Dorenbusch scored and Trinkle advanced to third on a Lollar groundout. Then Mann followed with a single to drive in Trinkle.
Bloomington North (17-9) opened the seventh inning with a single, but Burton enduced the next batter to bounce to Mann at shortstop. Mann stepped on second for one out, then threw to first for a double play. Burton then fanned the next batter to end the game.
Columbus North is seeking its 12th sectional title in baseball but its first since 1995. The Bull Dogs have won previous sectionals in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, 1972, 1976, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1994 and 1995.
