Bloomington South tops Columbus North 4-0 for softball sectional title

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Olivia White pitched a three-hit shutout and started the game-winning rally Friday evening (May 30), lifting the Bloomington South softball team to a 4-0 victory over Columbus North for the championship of Class 4A Sectional 14.
White also struck out six batters while walking one and hitting one batter as the defending champion Panthers claimed the program's seventh sectional title. They previously won sectionals in 1994, 1996, 1997, 2001, 2002 and 2013.
The decision moved Bloomington South (17-8) into a regional game at 7 p.m. Tuesday (June 3) at Franklin (17-9), the Sectional 13 champion. Both the Panthers and Lady Cubs are seeking their first regional crown.
In the sectional final, both teams struggled for offense until Bloomington South pieced together a four-run burst in the bottom of the third inning at Lincoln Park.
White started things by drawing a walk from senior pitcher Grayson Harney, then moved to second on a steal attempt when the throw was dropped. One out later, senior Elizabeth Getz drew another walk and a single to center by junior Ali Sexton drove in White with what proved to be the decisive run.
Senior Mena Fulton then singled in Getz, and senior Whitney Ennis doubled in Sexton to prompt Bull Dogs coach Jerry Burton to bring sophomore Christine Bombardiere to the circle.
Bombardiere enduced senior Ashley Egan to ground out, but that brought Fulton home before Bombardiere ended the inning with a strikeout.
Columbus North had a chance in the first inning when it loaded the bases and again in the third when it put two runners on. But the Bull Dogs (17-11) -- whose offense consisted of singles by senior Denisa Brooks, sophomore Katie Prall and sophomore Tommi Stowers -- were unable to get a big hit when they needed it and managed just one base runner over the final four innings.
The decision marked the final game for Burton, who had announced several weeks ago that he would be retiring from coaching at the end of the season.
In five seasons with Columbus North, Burton went 88-53 with two sectional titles (2011, 20012) and one regional crown (2011). In 23 total seasons, including 16 at Columbus East and two at Jennings County, Burton's teams won 369 games.
CN's senior class -- including Brooks, Harney, Shannah Hercamp and Marissa Anderson -- completed their four seasons with a 71-46 record.
