Columbus North, Bloomington South reach softball sectional final
May 30, 2014Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Christine Bombardiere crushed a three-run home run and classmate Tommi Stowers added a two-run double Thursday evening (May 29), sparking the Columbus North softball team to an 8-6 victory over Shelbyville the semifinals in Class 4A Sectional 14 hosted by Columbus North.
Senior Denisa Brooks went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Bull Dogs, who used eight hits to improve to 17-10 and earn a date against Bloomington South in the sectional final at 7 p.m. Friday (May 30) back at Lincoln Park. The Panthers (16-8) defeated Bloomington North 3-0 in the first semifinal on Thursday.
In the nightcap, Stowers' two-run double capped a four-run fourth inning as Columbus North overcame a 5-4 deficit.
Senior Grayson Harney started the rally with a single and Brooks followed with an infield single, Harney and Brooks advancing to second and third on an error. Sophomore Katie Prall then hit a bouncer to short, but the throw home was wide and both runners scored. Bombardiere then reached on an error that sent Prall to third, and Bombardiere moved to second when Shelbyville just let her take the base. Stowers then delivered a rope down the left-field line to score Prall and Bombardiere.
The Golden Bears (20-8), who pounded out 11 hits but committed six errors, rallied for one run in the sixth. But after allowing a leadoff walk in the seventh, Harney retired the next three hitters in order to seal the decision.
Bombardiere opened the scoring a shot over the left-field fence in the bottom of the first that drove home Brooks and Prall to give Columbus North a 3-0 lead against sophomore pitcher Taylor Perry, a last-minute starter when Shelbyville freshman ace Hannah File was injured running the bases in the top of the first.
Shelbyville made it 3-1 in the second when senior Bree Elrod doubled home a run, but CN extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the frame when Prall singled home sophomore Makayla Caudill.
The Golden Bears put together a four-run burst in the third inning when Achenbach doubled home three runs and later scored when freshman Natalie Weber reached on an error. But that just set the stage for the CN fourth, where the Bull Dogs countered with four runs of their own and took the lead for good.
In the first game, senior Mena Fulton's three-run triple accounted for all the scoring and junior Olivia White pitched a one-hitter as defending sectional champion Bloomington South knocked off rival Bloomington North.
White led off the decisive fifth inning with an infield single. Senior Elizabeth Getz and junior Ali Sexton each followed with singles before Fulton delivered a shot to right-center field that cleared the bases.
In the circle, White was masterful, allowing just the one hit while striking out 10 Cougars and facing just one batter over the minimum.
Freshman pitcher Kenzey Ridge allowed just six hits and struck out eight for Bloomington North, which finished its season at 10-13.
