Bloomington North girls tennis ousts Columbus North
May 28, 2014Columbus North High School
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Freshman Aubrey Smith won in straight sets at No. 1 singles Wednesday (May 28), but that was not enough as the Columbus North girls tennis team saw its season end in the finals of the Bloomington South Regional.
No. 11 Bloomington North defeated the No. 18 Bull Dogs 4-1.
Smith defeated the Cougars' Sarah Coghlan 6-3, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, but that was the only point for Columbus North, which finished with a 16-9 team record. Bloomington North, which improved to 19-2, advanced to the Jasper Semistate at 10 a.m. Saturday (May 31).
Bloomington North's Megan Coghlan and Megan Gardner won the other two singles matches, while the Cougars tandems of Taylor Bode and Bailey Gardner as well as Nicole Ortiz and Lauren Wicker prevailed in doubles.
Megan Coghlan topped CN sophomore Paige Littrell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Megan Gardner defeated Bull Dogs junior Rosemary Yonushonis 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Bode and Bailey Gardner beat CN senior Sara Vanderkolk and junior Sydney Anderson 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Ortiz and Wicker topped Bull Dogs juniors Meagan Olibo and Brooke Richardson 7-5, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
"The match was closer than the score looks," CN coach Kendal Hammel said. "We were right there for a good portion of it, but some points got away from us, especially at No. 1 doubles. That was disappointing because I thought they had a good chance to win, but it just wasn't there on this day. At 2 doubles, Megan and Brooke were right there through the first set, but it also got away."
Hammel said Smith had an excellent match at No. 1 singles.
"Aubrey played great and beat someone she had lost to earlier in the season," the coach said. "At 3 singles, Rosemary wasn't feeling particularly well. Still, she battled like she always does and gave herself a chance."
The loss by Vanderkolk and Anderson also knocked them out of the individual doubles tournament. They had been unbeaten in four previous postseason matches at No. 1 doubles. Smith lost one earlier postseason match at No. 1 singles, so she previously had been ousted from the individual singles tournament.
"I am disappointed because I thought we had a chance in this match." Hammel said. "But overall, our team made a lot of progress this season and we look forward to what the group can do in the future."
