May 27, 2014Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Nikki Ennis doubled home two runs and scored another Tuesday evening (May 27), leading the Bloomington South softball team to a 3-1 victory over East Central in Class 4A Sectional 14 hosted by Columbus North.
Junior Olivia White pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Panthers (15-8), who advanced to the semifinal round to meet cross-town rival Bloomington North (10-12) at 6 p.m. Thursday (May 29). The Cougars defeated Columbus East 3-0 in Tuesday's first first-round game at Lincoln Park.
Columbus North (16-10) will face Shelbyville in the second semifinal on Thursday. The semifinal winners will meet for the sectional title at 7 p.m. Friday (May 30).
In Tuesday's second game, Bloomington South senior Ashlie Egan, junior Maggie Hopkins and White each singled to load the bases in the bottom of the second. Ennis then delivered a liner to left field that resulted in a two-run double.
Ennis produced a one-out triple to right field in the sixth inning, then scored on a single by junior Ali Sexton.
East Central (16-13) had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Junior Olivia Quick walked, stole second, then scored when a sacrifice bunt by senior Chloe Wilhelm resulted in a throwing error by White.
In the first game, Bloomington North scored three unearned runs in the fifth inning to knock off Columbus East.
Sophomore Natalie Crane and junior Brooke Collins started things with one-out singles. Freshman Emily Liford sacrificed them to second and third. Senior Emily Ridge followed with a grounder to short that was mishandled, allowing Crane to score and Collins to move to third. Senior Emma Frasier then singled to left to bring home Collins, and senior Hannah Densford following with another single to drive in Ridge.
Columbus East (6-16) threatened to score in the first, fourth and seventh innings, but it could not get a run across. The Olympians loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth, but Cougars freshman Kenzey Ridge then struck out three batters in a row to end the inning.
Kenzie Ridge struck out 10 for the game.
