Terre Haute South softball tops Columbus North 5-3
May 24, 2014Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Tommi Stowers ripped a two-run home run Saturday (May 24), but it was not enough as the Columbus North softball team dropped a 5-3 decision to visiting Terre Haute South in their regular-season finale at Northside Middle School.
Coach Jerry Burton, who is retiring at the end of the season, was recognized in a pregame ceremony. He has been a varsity coach for 23 seasons -- 16 at Columbus East, two at Jennings County and the past five at Columbus North. He has won 368 games overall and has an 87-52 record with the Bull Dogs.
The visiting Braves took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning against CN starter Christine Bombardiere. The Bull Dogs rallied in the bottom of the inning when senior Denisa Brooks walked, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice by Bombardiere and scored on a Stowers groundout.
Terre Haute South pushed its advantage to 5-1 in the third inning, knocking Bombardiere out of the circle. Senior Grayson Harney entered and did not allow any runs over the remaining four-plus innings.
Bombardiere walked to open the sixth inning, and Stowers followed with a shot over the left-field fence to give the Bull Dogs hope. But THS senior Kelsey Marlow relieved junior Jackie Swain, and she allowed just one hit the rest of the way.
Senior Shannah Hercamp stroked two singles for CN, while Harney had a double.
Columbus North (16-10) returns to action when it meets Shelbyville at 7:30 p.m. next Thursday (May 29) in the semifinals of the Columbus North Sectional at Lincoln Park.
Sectional play begins on Tuesday (May 27) when Bloomington North faces Columbus East at 6 p.m. East Central and defending champion Bloomington South play in the second first-round game. The first-round winners meet in the first semifinal game at 6 p.m. Thursday.
The semifinal winners meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 30) for the sectional championship.
