COLUMBUS, Ind -- Sophomore Tommi Stowers went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs on Friday (May 23), sparking the Columbus North softball team to a 10-0 victory over Hauser in five innings.
The Bull Dogs improved to 16-9 heading into their final regular-season game at 1 p.m. Saturday (May 24) against Terre Haute South.
Senior Denisa Brooks went 3-for-4 and scored two runs for the Bull Dogs. Senior Shannah Hercamp, junior Kelsay Lucas and junior Sheana Wasilewski also had hits for CN.
Senior Grayson Harney pitched a two-hit shutout. She allowed just two singles and struck out five.
Columbus North scored three runs in the third inning, Stowers striking the big blow with a bases-clearing double. Wasilweski started the rally when she was hit by a pitch. Brooks singled, and sophomore Katie Prall reached on an error. Sophomore Christine Bombardiere hit into a fielder's choice, and Stowers followed with her double for three runs.
The Bull Dogs brought 10 batters to the plate in the fifth inning, scoring seven runs.
Brooks started things with a single and Prall reached on an error. Bombardiere walked, and Stowers followed with a two-run single. Lucas and Hercamp each delivered a run-scoring single, then Wasilewski ripped a two-run triple. Brooks ended the game with a single to drive in Wasilewski.
The game on Saturday will feature a reunion of past players to recognize CN coach Jerry Burton, who is retiring at the end of the season. Burton has been a varsity coach for 23 seasons -- 16 years at Columbus East (1991-2006), two years at Jennings County (2008 and 2009) and the past five seasons at Columbus North (2010-2014).
Burton's teams have won 368 games during his 23 seasons, including an 87-51 mark during his tenure with the Bull Dogs.
