COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Devin Mann went 5-for-6 with three doubles and a triple on Saturday (May 17), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of visiting Whiteland at Southside Elementary School.
Mann went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple as the Class 4A No. 8 Bull Dogs rolled to a 12-1 victory in the opener in five innings. The standout shortstop went 3-for-3 with two doubles as CN used an eight-run sixth inning to prevail 12-4 in the second game.
Junior Evan Finke was 5-for-7 with a double over the two games, while sophomore Hunter Liggett was 4-for-7 with a double as Columbus North improved to 16-5-1.
Mann completed his day with 10 doubles and five triples for the season. His doubles total is one off the school record of 11 set in 1993 by Tony Nelson and matched last season by Mann. The triples total is two off the school record of seven set in 1977 by Dan Shoultz.
Sophomore Canaan Baum had two RBIs for the day, one in each game, moving his season total to 37. That is one off the school record of 38 RBIs set by Shoultz in 1978.
Junior Jon Cox pitched a six-hitter to pick up the win in the opener to move his record to 5-0. Finke (1-0) came on in relief in the second game, allowing no runs and one hit over two innings while striking out four. Freshman Nathan VanDeventer started, allowing four runs and 11 hits over five innings.
In the opening game, Mann, Baum, Finke, Liggett and senior Christian Glass all went 2-for-3 as the Bull Dogs combined three runs in the first, four in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth for the quick victory.
In the second game, CN trailed 4-2 after the top of the fifth but rallied for two runs in the bottom of the fifth and exploded for eight runs in the sixth to prevail.
A double by sophomore Collin Lollar, a Mann single, a Finke double and a single by junior Cody Burton accounted for the two runs in the fifth. Glass triggered the eight-run sixth with a two-run double, while Lollar, Finke, senior Will Dorenbusch and Liggett also had RBIs in the innings.
Columbus North returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday (May 20) when it faces Southport in a Conference Indiana game at Holder Field in Indianapolis.
