COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Christine Bombardiere drove home Denisa Brooks in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday (May 17), lifting the Columbus North softball team to a heart-stopping 6-5 victory over Brownstown Central.
Brooks opened the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Katie Prall. Bombardiere then delivered a run-scoring double to make a winner of senior pitcher Grayson Harney, who was the third of three CN pitchers as the Bull Dogs improved to 15-8.
Brooks, Harney and sophomore Tommi Stowers each had two hits for CN, while Harney and junior Kelsay Lucas each ripped a home run as part of an 11-hit attack.
Columbus North took a 1-0 lead in the first when Prall doubled and ultimately scored on a Bombardiere groundout.
The Braves tied the game in the second on a solo home run by Katelyn Gray, but the Bull Dogs went ahead in the fifth on a Lucas three-run home run. Brooks and Prall each reached base before Lucas' shot.
Brownstown responded with a four-run sixth inning, a Columbus North error igniting a two-out rally by the visitors. However, CN tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Harney solo home run.
Both teams were scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings, and Harney struck out the side in the top of the ninth. That set the stage for Brooks, Prall and Bombardiere to combine for the decisive run.
In the JV game, Brownstown Central prevailed 12-0.
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 20) when it visits Jennings County. The Bull Dogs follow by hosting Greensburg at 5 p.m Wednesday (May 21) in a makeup of a May 14 rainout.
CN's game that was scheduled on Thursday (May 22) against Hauser has been moved to 4:30 p.m. Friday (May 23) because Hauser has a conference makeup game on Thursday.
The Bull Dogs close their regular season at 1 p.m. next Saturday (May 24) when they host Terre Haute South.
