Columbus North softball stops Southport 6-2
May 16, 2014Columbus North High School
INDIANAPOLIS -- Sophomore Katie Prall doubled, singled and scored two runs Thursday (May 15), leading the Columbus North softball team to a 6-2 victory over Southport at Holder Field.
Junior Sheana Wasilewski drove in two runs for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 14-8 overall and clinched no worse than a tie for second in Conference Indiana at 4-1.
Southport fell to 9-10 and 0-3.
Columbus North took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when junior Kelsay Lucas singled in sophomore Christine Bombardiere. Bombardiere had reached on a fielder's choice and advance to second on a single by sophomore Tommi Stowers.
After Southport tied the game in the bottom of the first, the Bull Dogs went ahead 2-1 in the second when a Wasilewski sacrifice fly brought home senior Grayson Harney. Sophomore Makayla Caudill singled to open the rally, and Harney reached on a fielder's choice before scoring on Wasilewski's fly ball.
CN made it 3-1 in the third when Prall singled, advance to second on a Bombardiere sacrifice and scored on a Stowers double.
The Cardinals narrowed their deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, but Columbus North clinched the result with three runs in the fifth.
Prall opened the burst with a double, and Bombardiere doubled her home. Stowers was hit by a pitch and Lucas loaded the bases when everyone was safe on her fielder's choice. Bombardiere was out at the plate on another fielder's choice, but a bases-loaded walk to Caudill brought another run in and a Wasilewski fielder's choice brought the final run home.
Harney pitched a complete game, striking out three and walking just one to improve to 8-2.
Columbus North returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday (May 17) when it hosts Brownstown Central in a single game. The Bull Dogs follow by traveling to Jennings County at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (May 20).
