Columbus North softball to meet Shelbyville in sectional semifinal

    The Columbus North softball team drew a first-round bye and will begin play in the semifinals of Class 4A Sectional 14 hosted by Columbus North at Lincoln Park.
    The Bull Dogs (13-8) will begin postseason action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (May 29) against Shelbyville (14-6). CN defeated the Golden Bears 6-3 on April 10.
    The sectional begins on Tuesday (May 27) when Bloomington North faces Columbus East in the 6 p.m. opening game. East Central and defending champion Bloomington South will square off in the second first-round game later that day.
    The two Tuesday winners will play in the opening semifinal at 6 p.m. Thursday (May 29). The Columbus North-Shelbyville game will follow.
    The semifinal winners will meet for the sectional championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 30).
    The sectional winner will advance to a one-game regional at 7 p.m. Tuesday (June 3) at the home of the Sectional 13 winner.
    The regional winner will qualify for a berth in a four-team semistate on Saturday (June 7) at Center Grove. Winners from regionals 5 and 8 will play at 10 a.m. with winners from regionals 6 and 7 playing at noon. The semistate championship will be at 4 p.m. The Sectional 14 winner would be in noon game if they advance.
    The semistate winner moves to a one game Class 4A State Finals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (June 14) at Ben Davis.
    This is the 30th annual IHSAA softball state tournament series. A total of 375 teams will compete in four classes -- 101 teams are in Class 4A. Portage, currently ranked 10th in Class 4A, is the defending 4A state champion.
    Admission to the sectional is $6 per person per session. An all-session pass is available for $9 per person.
