Columbus North leads Perry Meridian 6-0 in suspended baseball game
May 13, 2014Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Evan Finke was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI on Tuesday (May 13), leading the Class 4A No. 8 Columbus North baseball team to a 6-0 lead over Perry Meridian when the game was suspended in the bottom of the fifth because of rain.
Freshman Cooper Trinkle, sophomore Collin Lollar, junior Josh Hogan and sophomore Hunter Liggett also had hits for the Bull Dogs, who brought a 13-4-1 overall record and a 1-1 Conference Indiana mark into the game.
Senior Christian Glass had pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits at the Southside Elementary School diamond.
The Bull Dogs took a 5-0 lead in the first inning when they brought 10 batters to the plate. Sophomore Canaan Baum started things when he was hit by a pitch, and Finke followed with a double to drive Baum home. Junior Cody Burton reached on an error with Finke scoring.
Senior Will Dorenbusch also reached on an error, and Liggett, Hogan and Lollar followed with consecutive singles to cap the five-run burst.
CN added a run in the second inning. Baum reached on an error, moved to second on a passed ball and went to third on a Finke fly out. Baum then scored on a Burton sacrifice fly.
With CN leading and the game reaching the bottom of the fifth, it is possible this will be considered a game and a victory. Or it's possible that the Falcons will return to resume the suspended game. That decision has not been announced.
Columbus North is scheduled to return to action at 6 p.m. Wednesday (May 14) when it hosts Bloomington South in another CI contest. The Bull Dogs are scheduled to host Roncalli at 5:30 p.m. Friday (May 16).
