Columbus North boys golf places second in three-team meet

    FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Senior Nick Waskom shot a 1-over-par 73 on Wednesday (May 7), but the Columbus North boys golf team finished second in a three-school meet at Hillview Country Club.
    No. 7 Center Grove won the meet with a 296, while the No. 2 Bull Dogs totaled a 300. Host Franklin was third with a 320 over the 6,650-yard layout.
    Senior Christian Fairbanks added a 74, senior Ian Coffey carded a 76 and senior Michael VanDeventer had a 77 to complete the top four for Columbus North. Freshman Spencer Fairbanks tallied a 78, senior Zack Lee shot an 80, junior Conner Hayes had an 81 and junior Kyung Kim shot an 83 to complete the CN lineup.
    Center Grove's Austin Crowder was the medalist with a 70.
    "We played all right against a very good Center Grove team on an unfamiliar course," CN coach Doug Bieker said. "On a neutral course, it will be very competitive."
    Center Grove also won the nine-hold JV match. The Trojans amassed a 162, four strokes better than Columbus North and 14 better than Franklin.
    CN junior Connor Opalka was JV medalist with a 39. Other CN scores were freshman Matt Vorndran with a 42, sophomore Zach Whisman with a 42, junior Jake Armuth with a 43, sophomore Jared Imlay with a 44, freshman Zachary Schiavello with a 45, junior Devin Abendroth with a 46 and freshman Bryce Turner with a 48.
    Columbus North returns to action at 4 p.m. Thursday (May 8) when it faces Columbus East at Otter Creek Golf Course.
