Columbus East baseball edges Columbus North 4-3
May 7, 2014Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Canaan Baum smacked a three-run double in the fifth inning Wednesday (May 7), but it was not enough as the Columbus North baseball team dropped a 4-3 decision to rival Columbus East.
In front of a large crowd at the new diamond at Southside Elementary School, Baum's blast drove home freshman Cooper Trinkle, sophomore Collin Lollar and junior Devin Mann to cut into a 4-0 deficit. But Baum was thrown out at third in trying to stretch the hit into a triple, and CN did not threaten in the sixth or seventh innings as it fell to 12-3-1.
Senior Christian Wichman went 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and three RBIs for Columbus East. Sophomore Takahiro Yamada went 2-for-3 with two runs, while junior Sam Claycamp was 1-for-2 with a triple for the Olympians.
Mann went 2-for-3 for the Bull Dogs, while Lollar and sophomore Brice McDaniel had one hit apiece.
Columbus East took a 2-0 lead in the first when Yamada walked, sophomore Nick Andrie was hit by a pitch and Wichman doubled both home.
The Olympians made it 3-0 in the third when Yamada singled, Andrie walked and Wichman produced an RBI single.
East made it 4-0 in the fourth when Claycamp tripled and senior Alex Hasson singled him home.
North rallied in the fifth inning for its three runs, but East starter Peyton Gray completed the inning with the lead and junior Cam Curry pitched two shutout innings for the save.
Lollar started for the Bull Dogs and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out eight. Senior Christian Glass relieved and allowed just one hit in 2 2/3 innings.
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (May 8) when it visits Greenwood. The Bull Dogs host Floyd Central at 6 p.m. Friday (May 9) at the Southside diamond.
