CN's Lucas commits to Oakland University for softball

Columbus North junior Kelsay Lucas has made an oral commitment to play softball at Oakland University in Rochester, Mich.
A third baseman-pitcher, Lucas is hitting .385 with 20 hits in 52 at-bats so far this season for the 10-7 Bull Dogs. She has scored 12 runs while producing eight doubles, one home run and 20 RBIs. As a sophomore, Lucas hit .429 with 10 doubles and 21 RBIs. As a freshman, Lucas hit .342 with seven doubles and 20 RBIs.
In the circle, Lucas has no decisions with one strikeout in 6.2 innings this season. As a sophomore, Lucas was 4-3 with 30 strikeouts and a 2.72 ERA in 36.0 innings. As a freshman, Lucas was 6-3 with 38 strikeouts and a 2.58 ERA in 62.1 innings.
Lucas will be joining an Oakland program that is part of Horizon League, an NCAA Division I conference that includes Valparaiso University and six other schools. The Golden Grizzlies are 16-23 overall 5-9 in HL games through May 4.
Other softball-playing teams in the conference are Wisconsin-Green Bay, Wright State, Youngstown State, Cleveland State, Illinois-Chicago and Detroit.
Oakland is coached by Connie Miner, who is in her second season with the Golden Grizzlies. Previously, Miner was head coach at Eastern Michigan (1998-1996), San Jose State (1997-2000) and UC-Riverside (2004-2011). She also has been an assistant coach at UC-Riverside and North Carolina.
Lucas expects to sign a national letter of intent with Oakland in November and begin school there in the 2015-16 academic year. She will start playing for the Golden Grizzlies in the 2016 season.
Miner cannot comment on Lucas until after Lucas signs a national letter of intent.
