May 5, 2014Columbus North High School
GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Sophomore Collin Lollar singled home senior Will Dorenbusch in the top of the 10th inning Saturday (May 3), giving the Columbus North baseball team a 5-4 victory and a sweep of a doubleheader at Class 3A No. 2 Greensburg.
Dorenbusch drew a walk to lead off the inning against Pirates reliever Jake Kelso, and Dorenbusch moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Christian Glass. One out later, Lollar delivered his game-winning hit.
Glass, pitching in relief, completed his stint with a third scoreless inning as the Bull Dogs improved to 12-2-1.
Lollar finished the game by going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and scoring two runs for Columbus North. Dorenbusch and sophomore Brice McDaniel each went 2-for-4 in support. Macy Holdsworth was 3-for-5 with a double, two home runs and four RBIs for Greensburg (8-2).
Junior Cody Burton pitched seven innings for the Bull Dogs, allowing four runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts. Trevor Reynolds started for the Pirates, yielding four runs on nine hits over six innings.
Holdsworth hit a two-run home run in the first to give the hosts an early lead, but Columbus North countered with one run in the fourth and one more in the fifth on respective RBIs by Burton and sophomore Canaan Baum.
Greensburg went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth when Holdsworth doubled in Collin Rigney, but CN tied it in the sixth when Burton scored on a squeeze bunt by sophomore Hunter Liggett.
CN went ahead 4-3 in the seventh when Lollar tripled and scored on a bunt by McDaniel, but the Pirates forced extra innings when Holdsworth ripped a one-out solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Neither team scored in the eighth or ninth innings, but Lollar delivered a two-out single in the 10th that proved decisive. Glass saw his record move to 1-1, while Kelso dropped to 0-1.
Earlier, junior Devin Mann went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a home run to help Columbus North post a 20-10 victory in five innings in the opener of the doubleheader.
Junior Evan Finke and Burton also added three hits for the Bull Dogs, who used eight runs in the second inning and six more in the fourth to knock the Pirates from the ranks of the unbeaten.
CN ripped Greensburg pitching for 18 hits in the contest, including nine doubles and Mann's home run. Finke and Dorenbusch each had a pair of doubles, while Baum, Lollar and Burton had one double apiece.
Mann's two-run double highlighted the big second inning, while a Finke two-run double was the big blow in the sixth. Columbus North also scored two runs in the first and four runs in the fifth in the game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.
Columbus North returns to action at 5 p.m. Wednesday (May 7) when it hosts rival Columbus East at Southside Elementary School. The Bull Dogs follow by traveling to Greenwood at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (May 8) and then host Floyd Central at 6 p.m. Friday (May 9).
