Bloomington North boys, Columbus North girls win Conference Indiana

May 5, 2014
Columbus North High School

INDIANAPOLIS -- The ninth-ranked Bloomington North boys and No. 9 Columbus North girls used different methods, but both squads won team titles Friday night (May 2) at the Conference Indiana track and field championships.
Junior Drew Ludwig captured the long jump at 21 feet, 6 1/2 inches and the foursome of sophomore John Earl Manns, senior Jop Horning, junior Delvon Wilson and sophomore Bryce Frazier took the 4x400 in 3:26.47, but those were the Cougars' only two crowns as they employed strong depth to amass 118 points and claim the boys' team championship at Southport High School.
Bloomington South placed second with 112 points followed by Columbus North with 94.5 and Franklin Central with 75. Southport with 70 points, Terre Haute South with 67.5, Perry Meridian with 62 and Terre Haute North with 25 rounded out the eight-school competition.
The boys' team championship was Bloomington North's first since the conference was formed for the 1997-98 school year.
In the girls' meet, seniors Mackenzie Caldwell, Tessa Krempel and Gabby Sims combined for five event titles as the Bull Dogs seized the team championship with 118 points. The team title was the second over 17 seasons of CI competition for the Bull Dogs, joining a previous crown in 2008.
No. 13 Bloomington South was the girls' runner-up with 102 points followed by Terre Haute North with 101.5 and No. 20 Bloomington North with 99. Franklin Central was fifth with 66.5 points followed by Perry Meridian with 48.5, Terre Haute South with 48.5 and Southport with 39.
Bloomington South junior Deakin Volz set the only meet record, clearing 16-6 in the pole vault. That performance broke a mark of 15-6 set by Volz's brother Drew in 2011.
Two other Panthers claimed blue ribbons. They were junior Danny Thomas, clocked in 15.46 in the 110 high hurdles, and senior Alex Olson, who cleared 6-6 in the high jump.
Three Columbus North boys stood atop the podium. They were senior Kaden Eaton, first in the 1,600 in 4:20.66; junior Michael Behling, first in the 300 hurdles in 41.19; and junior Ezra Followell, first in the discus at 145-7.
Franklin Central senior Marcel Price was the only double winner in the boys' meet, taking the 100 in 11.53 and the 200 in 22.47. He also ran a leg on the Flashes' winning 4x100 that prevailed in 43.37. He was joined by junior Aaron Austin, sophomore Robert Ritter and senior Najee Wilkins on that relay.
FC also took the opening 4x800 with junior Robbie Talhelm, senior Evan Shuck, senior Andrew Schmalfeldt and junior Kyle O'Malley combining for a time of 8:00.14.
Other event winners were Southport senior Clayton Bowie, Perry Meridan junior Stathis Krauth and Terre Haute South senior Riley Stohler and junior Jordon Montgomery. Bowie won the 3,200 in 9:20.18, while Krauth took the 400 in 50.64. Stohler crossed first in the 800 in 1:58.02, and Montgomery prevailed in the shot put in 50-10.
For the winning Columbus North girls, Caldwell prevailed in the 1,600 in 5:03.00 and joined with sophomore teammate Sierra Lax for a 1-2 finish in the 3,200 with marks of 10:58.84 and 11:08.50. Krempel posted a school-record throw of 145-4 to win the discus and also won the shot put with mark of 41-4. Sims took the 400 in 58.26.
Bloomington South had four winning performances, while Bloomington North collected three blue ribbons and Terre Haute North took two.
Sophomore Megan Grabowski won the 100 in 12.83 and the 200 in 26.20 for the Panthers. She also anchored the triumphant 4x100 that prevailed in 50.27 and also included senior Isabelle Conrad, junior Emily Morrone and freshman Cameron Lien. Another Bloomington South winner was sophomore Emily Finley, who cleared 10-6 in the pole vault to edge Columbus North sophomore Katrina May on misses.
Bloomington North junior Trinity Clements was another double winner. She prevailed in the 100 hurdles in 15.47 and the 300 hurdles in 47.18. Senior Ashley Hash also took a blue ribbon for the Cougars, clearing 5-2 in the high jump.
