SEYMOUR, Ind. -- Junior Devin Mann with 2-for-2 with a triple and a grand slam on Friday (May 2), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 16-8 triumph at Seymour.
Mann also walked twice and scored four runs while sophomore Canaan Baum went 4-for-5 with a double two runs and four RBIs as the Bull Dogs improved to 10-2-1.
Together, the CN lineup pounded out 15 hits -- including six extra-base hits -- and scored in six of seven innings against the Owls. Junior Jon Cox pitched five innings to move to 3-0 on the mound. Sophomore Brice McDaniel hurled notched the last six outs, allowing no runs and just one hit while striking out three.
A four-run second inning and a five-run fifth inning proved decisive for Columbus North.
Up 1-0 entering the second, senior Will Dorenbusch singled, Liggett doubled and freshman Cooper Trinkle drove in Dorenbusch on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Collin Lollar and Mann then reached to load the bases before Baum ripped a bases-clearing double.
The Bull Dogs had extended their lead to 7-2 after four innings when they broke the game open. Mann's grand slam was the big blow in the fifth, and Baum followed with a single before McDaniel tripled him home.
Seymour rallied with a six-run fifth highlighted by a two-run double by Logan Richey, but Columbus North ended all doubt with four more runs in the seventh inning. Baum singled home one run, senior Morgan Murdock scored on an error and Liggett brought two more runs in on a play where he was credited with a fielder's choice.
For the game, Finke finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, Trinkle was 2-for-4 with one run and Burton went 2-for-4 with a double, one run and one RBI.
Columbus North returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday (May 3) when it visits Greensburg for a doubleheader. The Bull Dogs follow by hosting rival Columbus East at 5 p.m. Wednesday (May 7) at the Southside Elementary School diamond.
