COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Junior Cody Burton ripped a second-inning home run and lofted a seventh-inning sacrifice fly Thursday (May 1), propelling the Columbus North baseball team to a come-from-behind 7-6 victory over Lawrence Central at Southside Elementary School.
Burton's fly ball brought home sophomore Canaan Baum and capped a three-run inning for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 9-2-1 with the decision. Lawrence Central dropped to 11-5.
Burton's solo home run in the second inning gave Columbus North a 1-0 lead. The Bull Dogs pushed the count to 2-0 in the third when sophomore Collin Lollar singled, stole second and scored on a Baum single.
Lawrence Central rallied for five runs in the sixth inning with RBIs by junior Ernie Harshman and seniors Braxton Krieg and George Bowman combined with two runs on passed balls.
CN cut its deficit to 5-4 in the sixth when sophomore Brice McDaniel and junior Evan Finke each was hit by a pitch to reach base. With senior Morgan Murdock running for Finke, McDaniel and Murdock advanced on a passed ball. Senior Christian Glass then singled McDaniel home, and Murdock scored on an error on the play.
Harshman gave LC a two-run advantage with an RBI double in the top of the seventh, but the Bull Dogs countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
Lollar singled, sophomore Hunter Liggett walked and Baum singled to load the bases. Lollar scored on a passed ball, the other runners also advancing. McDaniel struck out, but he reached base on a dropped third strike with Liggett scoring and Baum moving to third. Finke walked to re-load the bases, and Burton followed with his game-winning RBI.
Glass pitched six innings, and McDaniel notched the final three outs to record his second victory with no losses on the mound. LC junior Jarrett Montgomery absorbed the loss by allowing the three seventh-inning runs, officially pitching one-third of an inning.
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Friday (May 2) when it visits Seymour. The Bull Dogs follow by traveling to Greensburg at 10 a.m. Saturday (May 3) for a doubleheader. CN faces Columbus East at 5 p.m. Wednesday (May 7) in its next home game.
