Columbus North boys golf wins Warsaw Invitational

April 28, 2014
Columbus North High School

WARSAW, Ind. -- Senior Michael VanDeventer shot a 69 on Saturday (April 26), capturing medalist honors and leading the No. 2 Columbus North boys golf team to the championship of the Warsaw Invitational.
The Bull Dogs had a 299 team total at Stonehenge Golf Club in Winona Lake. No. 17 Warsaw finished second with a 313. The Tigers were followed by Crown Point (326), Homestead (326), Mishawaka Marian (333) and Fort Wayne Canterbury (333) in the 10-school competition.
CN's senior-laden lineup also included Christian Fairbanks with a 73, who was the individual runner-up in over the par-71, 6,950-yard layout. Senior Nick Waskom added a 78, while classmates Zach Lee and Ian Coffey each shot 79. Playing separately, juniors Jake Armuth carded an 86 and junior Connor Opalka had an 88.
"This is Michael's second invitational win in the last two weeks, and he continues to play well," CN coach Doug Bieker said, noting VanDeventer had birdies on holes 9, 10, 13 and 18 to go with bogeys on Nos. 5 and 16.
"Christian also played well. After a triple-bogey 8 on his second hole, he fought back to shoot a 2-over 73 to finish second. We played much better one through five. I like seeing all the scores under 80, but would prefer to see them under 75. I am proud of Zack Lee, and the efforts he is continuing to make for the Bull Dogs."
At Fox Prairie Golf Course in Noblesville, a Bull Dogs' second team shot a 351 to place 21st in the 24-team Noblesville/Bob Spacey Invitational. Top-ranked Hamilton Southeastern won the event with a 297, three strokes better than Zionsville. Pendleton Heights and Westfield each shot 306, and Plainfield was fifth with a 311.
Freshman Matt Vorndran led CN with a 79, while junior Kyung Kim and freshman Spencer Fairbanks each tallied a 90. Freshman Bryce Turner shot a 92, and junior Devin Abendroth had a 96.
HSE's Chase Campbell was the individual medalist, beating teammate Johnny Watts on the third playoff hole. Both of them as well as Zionsville's Adam Wood had 71s through 18 holes.
Columbus North returns to action with a JV dual match at 4 p.m. Wednesday (April 30) against Hauser at Clifty Creek Golf Course.
The CN varsity plays at 8:30 a.m. Saturday (May 3) in the Bedford North Lawrence Invitational at Otis Park Golf Course. A second team plays at 7:30 a.m. Saturday (May 3) in the Rochester Invitational at Mill Creek Golf Course.
