GREENWOOD, Ind. -- Columbus North knocked off Class 4A No. 4 Roncalli 6-4 in the Center Grove Invitational on Saturday (April 26), but the Bull Dogs dropped two other games to go 1-2 overall in the softball event.
Sophomore Christine Bombardiere and senior Grayson Harney each collected a double as the Bull Dogs used a 12-hit attack to knock off the Rebels in the second of their three games in the competition. A four-run fourth inning proved to be the difference for CN. Harney pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Earlier, No. 12 Greenwood scored four more in the fifth inning to snap a 3-3 tie en route to an 8-3 victory in the Bull Dogs' opening game.
Harney, junior Kelsay Lucas, senior Denisa Brooks each had two hits in that contest -- Harney driving in two runs and sophomore Makayla Caudill having one RBI.
However, Greenwood countered with four runs in the fifth to take the lead for good. The Lady Woodman combined a walk, a single, a fielder's choice, another walk and triple to put together the rally. They added an insurance run in the sixth with a walk, two hits and an error resulting in the tally.
In the final game of the day, host Center Grove used five extra-base hits en route to a 12-7 decision over the Bull Dogs. Tied 5-5 after the top of the fifth, the Trojans exploded for a six-run fifth inning to take an 11-5 advantage and held on for the triumph. Lucas hit a home run for CN, which finished the day with a 7-7 record.
For the day, Brooks went 7-for-12 while sophomore Katie Prall was 5-for-10. Sophomore Tommi Stowers went 5-for-12, Lucas was 4-for-12 and Bombardiere and senior Shannah Hercamp each was 3-for-10.
The Bull Dogs are back in action at 6:15 p.m. Thursday (May 1) when they host Perry Meridian in a Conference Indiana game.
