Franklin Central baseball nips Columbus North 4-3 in 13 innings
April 24, 2014Columbus North High School
INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Ryne Carnes doubled home junior Aaron Snyder in the bottom of the 13th inning Wednesday (April 23), lifting the Franklin Central baseball team to a 4-3 victory over Columbus North.
Sophomore Collin Lollar went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while freshman Cooper Trinkle went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI for the Bull Dogs (7-2-1 overall, 0-1 Conference Indiana). Senior Christian Glass and sophomores Canaan Baum and Brice McDaniel each had one hit for CN.
Carnes finished 3-for-5 with three doubles and two RBIs for the Flashes (6-2, 2-0). Senior Ben Sprinkle went 2-for-5, while senior Jacob Potee was 1-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. Senior Jimmy Yates and senior Brandon Ruble each added one hit.
Columbus North took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Juniors Evan Finke and Cody Burton each was hit by a pitch, and Trinkle singled in Finke, Collin Lollar singled in Burton and Trinkle came around on an error.
The Flashes tied the game with three runs in the fourth. Ben Sprinkle and Yates each singled to set the stage. A Carnes double then drove in Ben Sprinkle, and Potee followed with another double to drive in Yates and Carnes.
A Lollar double led to a Columbus North threat in the eighth. But FC escaped the jam by getting Lollar out at third on a fielder's choice, and, after McDaniel singled Glass to third, a strikeout.
Lollar survived a two-on, one-out situation in the bottom of the eighth, and Baum got out of a two-on, two-out spot in the 10th. In the 12th, Franklin Central loaded the bases with two outs with two walks and a hit batsman, but Baum escaped that situation with a strikeout.
The Bull Dogs loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the 13th when Trinkle doubled, Lollar walked and Glass bunted for a single. But Baum flied to right, McDaniel popped out and Finke flied to right to end the threat.
Lollar pitched eight innings and allowed three runs and six hits. Baum relieved and allowed no runs and one hit over four innings before Burton came on in the 13th, yielding the decisive run before getting an out.
Senior Jake Sprinkle allowed three runs and five hits in 10 innings for Franklin Central. Yates picked up the victory by pitching the final three innings, allowing no runs and just three hits.
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. next Thursday (May 1) when it hosts Lawrence Central.
