CN's VanDeventer claims medalist honors at Spring Preview golf event

April 22, 2014
Columbus North High School

FRANKLIN, Ind. -- Michael VanDeventer fired a 2-under-par 70 on Saturday (April 19), leading the Columbus North boys golf team to a runner-up finish in the Spring Preview meet at The Legends Golf Club.
VanDeventer's total paced the No. 2 Bull Dogs to a 312 team total, 14 strokes behind fourth-ranked Hamilton Southeastern in the 23-team field that played a 6,850-yard layout at the site where the 2014 state tournament will be contested in June.
No. 3 Carmel finished third with a 314 followed by Corydon Central at 318 and Noblesville at 319. Jasper (323), Pendleton Heights (326), Floyd Central (329), Homestead (334) and Warsaw (335) rounded out the top 10.
Individually, VanDeventer bounced back from some disappointment last week when the Ball State recruit struggled down the stretch and dropped from first to third in the Hall of Fame Invitational in Peru. This time he posted a one-stroke win over Southeastern's Chase Campbell and finished two shots ahead of Southeastern's Johnny Watts, Carmel's Jeff Doty and Jasper's Cam Weyer.
"He played solidly all day," CN coach Doug Bieker said of VanDeventer, noting that the senior posted birdies on the second, fourth, 11th and 15th holes. "A three-putt on (No.) 12 and another bogey on (No.) 16 were his only blemishes."
Seniors Christian Fairbanks, Zack Lee, Nick Waskom and Ian Coffey completed the lineup for the Bull Dogs. Fairbanks and Lee each carded an 80, while Waskom tallied an 82 and Coffey had an 86.
Hamilton Southeastern had five players score better than 80 in claiming the event title. Campbell and Watts, also a BSU recruit, paced the Royals with a 71 and 72, respectively. Nick Kuster added a 77, while Graham McAree contributed a 78 and Cirus McAree carded a 79.
Over at Hickory Stick Golf Course in Greenwood, a Columbus North second team combined for a 327 score to place fourth in the Center Grove Invitational.
Junior Kyung Kim shot an 8-over 79 to place 10th and lead that group of Bull Dogs. Junior Devin Abendroth contributed an 82, while freshman and senior Jake Armuth each posted an 83. Junior Connor Opalka completed the CN lineup with a 91.
Host Center Grove won the eight-team event with a 295. Plainfield finished second with a 313 followed by Mt. Vernon (Fortville) with a 324 and Columbus North.
The Trojans' Chris Heck and Austin Crowder as well as Martinsville's Baylor Payne finished atop the individual leaderboard with 72s. Heck claimed medalist honors by winning a one-hole playoff.
Columbus North returns to action next Saturday (April 26) by sending contingents to two events. The Bull Dogs' top group will compete in the Warsaw Invitational at Stonehenge Golf Club in Winona Lake, Ind. The CN second team will compete in the Noblesville Invitational at Fox Prairie Golf Club in Noblesville.
