Columbus North baseball wins Columbus East Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Hunter Liggett drove in two runs and junior Cody Burton pitched a complete game Saturday (April 19), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 3-1 victory over Columbus East for the championship of the Columbus East Invitational.
Burton struck out nine and scattered seven hits to collect his second win as the Bull Dogs improved to 7-1-1. He also helped his team at the plate, reaching base and scoring in the fourth inning and doubling in the sixth.
Columbus North took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior Devin Mann walked, advanced to second on a fly out, stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Brice McDaniel.
CN made it 2-0 in the fourth when Burton was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Liggett single.
Columbus East countered with a run in the fifth on an RBI single by Takahiro Yamada, but the Bull Dogs pushed the count to 3-1 in the sixth. Burton started the rally with a double, and junior Josh Hogan was inserted as a courtesy runner. Hogan stole third before scoring on a Liggett single.
Earlier, sparked by home runs by Burton and sophomore Canaan Baum, Columbus North knocked off Muncie Central 10-0 in five innings to advance to the title game.
The Bull Dogs opened the scoring in the second when senior Will Dorenbusch walked, advanced to third on a Liggett single and scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Cooper Trinkle.
Burton led off the fourth with a home run to center field to make it 2-0.
CN exploded for eight runs in the fifth to close out the Bearcats.
McDaniel opened the burst with a triple and scored on a single by junior Evan Finke. Burton followed with an RBI triple before Dorenbusch walked. Liggett singled in Burton, then Dorenbusch scored on a double steal and Trinkle doubled home Liggett. Sophomore Collin Lollar walked, then Trinkle and Lollar advanced to second and third on another double-steal. Trinkle scored on a sacrifice fly by Mann, and Baum ended the game with a two-run home run.
Junior Jon Cox and Lollar combined for one-hitter with five strikeouts. Cox pitched 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts, while Lollar notched the last two outs in the top of the fifth.
Columbus North returns to action at 6 p.m. Tuesday (April 22) when it hosts Bloomington North in its Conference Indiana opener. The Bull Dogs follow with another CI game at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday (April 23) when they visit Franklin Central.
