Holliday chosen as MVP of Columbus North gymnastics

    Columbus North freshman Ashley Holliday was named MVP of the Bull Dogs' 2013-14 gymnastics team at the team banquet Thursday evening (April 17).
    Holliday, who placed second on bars and fifth on vault at the IHSAA state meet, was one of five athletes recognized at the season-ending gathering.
    Senior Megan Heathcote was named winner of the Bull Dog Award, while junior Tristan Gregg was cited as the team's Most Improved Gymnast. Heathcote tied for sixth on floor at the state meet, while Gregg was 20th on floor at the sectional for the Bull Dogs.
    Holliday, Heathcote, sophomore Katrina May and junior Kaitlyn Barnes were cited as all-Conference Indiana athletes, while Holliday, Heathcote and May were honored as all-state performers.
    Heathcote also was selected Academic All-State by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.
    At the state meet, May scored a 36.975 to tie for ninth place in the all-around as the Bull Dogs put up a season-best team score of 109.900, less than two points shy of Valparaiso's winning mark of 111.850 and the 111.225 of runner-up Fort Wayne Dwenger.
    May also tied for sixth on balance beam with a 9.300, placed eighth on bars with a 9.375, tied for 23rd on floor with a 9.100 and tied for 26th on vault with a 9.200.
    Holliday was 15th in the all-around with a 36.225. She had a score of 9.575 on bars and a 9.600 on vault. She also was 30th on floor with an 8.950 and tied for 38th on beam with an 8.100.
    Heathcote placed 17th in the all-around with a 35.950. She posted a 9.450 on floor for her top event finish. She also tied for 17th on vault with a 9.350, tied for 28th on bars with an 8.500 and tied for 28th on beam with an 8.650.
     Barnes tied for 23rd in the all-around with a 34.700. In each event, Barnes tied for 21st on beam with an 8.850, placed 36th on bars with an 8.175, tied for 34th on floor with an 8.825 and tied for 37th on vault with an 8.850. 
    Heathcote and senior Karley Anne Curtin were recognized as 2013-14 team captains. Barnes and May were announced as captains for 2014-15.
    Those presented with varsity letters were seniors Karley Anne Curtin and Megan Heathcote; juniors Kaitlyn Barnes, Tristan Gregg and Lauren Steigerwalt; sophomore Katrina May; and freshman Ashley Holliday.
    JV awards went to juniors Camber Anthony and Karen Smiar as well as sophomore Chloe Jorgensen.
