COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Denisa Brooks dashed home on an eighth-inning wild pitch, lifting the Columbus North softball team to a thrilling 3-2 victory over visiting Bloomington North.
Brooks opened the bottom of the eighth with a single, and she moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Katie Prall. Junior Kelsay Lucas drew a walk, and Brooks stole third base on ball four. Then with senior Shannah Hercamp at the plate, a pitch got away and Brooks raced home with the winning run at the Northside Middle School diamond.
Brooks and Bombardiere each went 2-for-4 for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in Conference Indiana. Sophomore Tommi Stowers added another hit for the Bull Dogs, while senior Molly Crowe picked up the win in the circle. She allowed six hits and struck out eight batters.
Columbus North took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Brooks had a leadoff single, and she came around when Prall reached on an error. Prall then scored on a Bombardiere groundout.
Bloomington North (3-2, 0-1) tied the game with single runs in the second and third innings. Emily Ridge doubled, and Hannah Densford singled her home for one run in the second. Emily Liford, Brooke Collins and Ridge put singles together for another run in the third.
The game remained deadlocked until the bottom of the eighth, when Brooks' speed proved decisive.
In the JV game, sophomore Katelyn Boroughs had three hits and freshman pitcher Madisyn Prince struck out 15 batters as the Bull Dogs defeated the Cougars 7-1.
Columbus North returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 19) when it faces Hauser in the first round of the Brown County Invitational. Brown County and Brownstown Central meet in the other first round game. Third-place and championship games will be later on Saturday.
The Bull Dogs' JV hosts Martinsville at 10 a.m. Saturday in a doubleheader at the Northside diamond.
