17 Columbus North seniors finalize college plans

    Seventeen Columbus North High School seniors put pens to paper on Wednesday (April 16) to finalize their commitments for college athletics and academics.
    Six soccer players, six track/cross country athletes and one athlete each in baseball, basketball, football, softball and swimming were among the those who took part in a ceremony at 3:30 p.m. in the CN Athletic Conference Room.
    Three of the 17 are signed National Letters of Intent with NCAA Division I programs for the 2014-15 school year -- Mackenzie Caldwell with Colorado and Gabby Sims with Ball State in women's track/cross country and Kaden Eaton with Belmont in men's track/cross country.
    In addition, senior basketball player Elliott Welmer had a ceremonial signing with Saint Louis for the 2015-16 school year. He plans to attend a prep school in 2014-15, reclassify and then join the Billikens as a freshman the following school year.
    Also, baseball player Christian Glass took part in a ceremonial signing. He will be a preferred walk-on at Xavier University in 2014-15.
    Others participating in this signing ceremony were soccer players Andre Abedian (University of Chicago), Riley Belding (Southern Indiana), Will Bridgeman (Hanover), Ben Davis (DePauw), Ethan Smith (Indianapolis) and Keaton Voegerl (Southern Indiana); track/cross country athletes Andy Carr (Indianapolis), Olivia Kelley (Southern Indiana) and Sam Starnes (Asbury, Ky.); softball player Grayson Harney (Indiana Tech); swimmer John Rupp (Rose-Hulman); and football player Luke Teague (Saint Joseph's).
    This was the third signing ceremony at Columbus North for the Class of 2014. The first occurred in November when nine seniors finalized their college plans. The second occurred in February when five seniors finalized college plans. There could be one more signing ceremony for CN senior athletes in May.
   The athletes finalizing plans, with more info about their sport and college choice are:
    >> Andre Abedian, men's soccer, University of Chicago: Notched eight goals with 14 assists in helping the Bull Dogs to a 19-1-1 record in 2013. He joins a Maroons' program that went 9-6-2 overall and 3-4-0 in the University Athletic Association last fall.
    >> Riley Belding, men's soccer, Southern Indiana: Scored six goals with 15 assists in helping the Bull Dogs to a 19-1-1 record in 2013. He joins a USI program that was 7-7-3 overall and 6-7-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference last fall.
    >> Will Bridgeman, men's soccer, Hanover College: Tallied seven goals with seven assists in helping the Bull Dogs to a 19-1-1 record in 2013. He joins a Panthers' program that was 10-8-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference last fall.
    >> Mackenzie Caldwell, women's track/cross country, University of Colorado: Runner-up in 2013 cross country state meet and placed third in the 1,600 and 3,200 in the 2013 state track meet. Won the 3,200 title at the 2014 indoor state competition. She joins a Colorado cross country program that was seventh in the 2013 NCAA meet and a track program that was 51st in the 2014 NCAA Indoor Nationals.
    >> Andy Carr, men's track/cross country, University of Indianapolis: Placed 12th individually at the 2013 cross country state meet. He joins a Greyhounds' cross country program that was fourth in the 2013 GLVC meet and a UIndy track program that was third in the 2014 GLVC indoor meet.
    >> Ben Davis, men's soccer, DePauw University: Had a 1.15 goals-against average over 12 games in helping the Bull Dogs to a 19-1-1 record in 2013. He joins a Tigers' program that went 14-2-3 overall and 5-2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference last fall.
    >> Kaden Eaton, men's track/cross country, Belmont University: Placed 19th individually at the 2013 cross country state meet. He joins a Bruins' squad that was second in the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference cross country meet and sixth in the OVC 2014 indoor track meet.
    >> Christian Glass, baseball, Xavier University: Has a 5.73 earned-run average with three strikeouts in 3.2 innings this season for the 4-0-1 Bull Dogs. Also hitting .667 with a double. He will join a Musketeers' program that is 20-14 so far in 2014.
    >> Grayson Harney, softball, Indiana Tech: Hitting .312 with one double so far this season for 2-3 Bull Dogs. She joins a Warriors' program that is 6-17 overall and 4-8 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference so far in 2014.
    >> Olivia Kelley, women's track/cross country, Southern Indiana: Placed 37th individually in the 2013 Conference Indiana meet. She joins a USI program that placed first in the 2013 GLVC cross country championships and sixth in the 2014 GLVC indoor meet.
    >> John Rupp, men's swimming, Rose-Hulman: Placed third in the 500-yard freestyle and fifth in the 200 IM in the 2014 Columbus North Sectional. Also helped the 200 medley relay to a runner-up finish in the sectional. He joins an Engineers' program that placed second in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin in 2014.
    >> Gabby Sims, track, Ball State: Placed third in the 400 in the 2013 track state meet after finishing third and fourth the previous two seasons. She joins a Cardinals' program that placed 12th in the 2013 Mid-American Conference meet.
    >> Ethan Smith, men's soccer, University of Indianapolis: Recorded a team-best 19 goals in helping the Bull Dogs to a 19-1-1 record in 2013. He joins a Greyhounds' program that went 15-3-3 overall and 12-1-2 in the GLVC last fall.
    >> Sam Starnes, men's cross country, Asbury (Ky.): Placed 16th individually in the 2013 Brown County Sectional. He joins an Eagles' program that was third in the 2013 Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference meet.
    >> Luke Teague, football, Saint Joseph's College: Produced a team-high 65 tackles (44 solos, 21 assists), including three tackles for loss and one sack, for 3-7 Bull Dogs in 2013. He joins a Pumas' program that went 8-3 overall and 5-2 in the GLVC in 2013.
    >> Keaton Voegerl, men's soccer, Southern Indiana: Posted a team-high 42 points on 16 goals and 10 assists in helping the Bull Dogs to a 19-1-1 record in 2013. He joins a USI program that was 7-7-3 overall and 6-7-2 in the GLVC last fall.
    >> Elliott Welmer, men's basketball, Saint Louis University: The 6-9 forward contributed 15.6 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.4 blocks while converting 61 percent from the floor and 62 percent on free throws as a senior for the 20-6 Bull Dogs. He will join a Billikens' program that went 27-7 and reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament in 2013-14.
