Baum's two blasts boost Columbus North past Franklin 13-7

   COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Canaan Baum ripped a pair of home runs and produced five RBIs on Tuesday (April 15), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 13-7 victory over Franklin at Southside Elementary School.
    Baum's first home run was a solo shot in the fourth inning, and he added a two-run blast in the fifth. He also had a two-run single in the third inning as the Bull Dogs improved to 5-0-1.
    Baum, junior Cody Burton and freshman Cooper Trinkle each had three hits, and together they helped make a winner of sophomore pitcher Collin Lollar (1-0), who struck out seven while allowing seven runs and 12 hits in six innings of work. Senior Christian Glass struck out one in one scoreless inning.
    Franklin took a 1-0 lead in the first when Ross Barr delivered an RBI single, but the Bull Dogs countered for three runs in the third when Baum singled home two runs and Lollar brought knocked in another.
    CN extended its lead to 5-1 in the third inning when Burton singled home junior Evan Finke and Trinkle singled home Burton.
    Franklin made it 5-3 in the fourth, but Baum hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning for a 6-3 count.
    The Cubs rallied to with 6-5 in the fifth, but Columbus North made it 9-5 in the bottom of the inning when junior Devin Mann tripled home Lollar and Baum followed with a two-run homer.
    Franklin added another two more runs in the sixth, but the Bull Dogs produced four more runs in the bottom of the inning -- two runs scored on a Lollar fielder's choice and two more scored when Mann reached on an error.
    Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (April 17) when it visits Shelbyville.
    CN follows by competing on Saturday (April 19) in the Columbus East Invitational. The Bull Dogs face Muncie Central at 11 a.m. in one first-round game while East Central and Columbus East square off in the other first-round game. Third-place and championship games are later on Saturday.
