Columbus North softball places sixth in Pendleton Heights Invitational

PENDLETON, Ind. -- Senior Denisa Brooks went 7-for-12 with a triple over three games, but the Columbus North softball team managed a sixth-place finish in the eight-team Pendleton Heights Invitational.
Senior Grayson Harney provided offensive support for the Bull Dogs (2-3) by going 4-for-10 with a double, while sophomore Katie Prall, junior Kelsay Lucas and senior Shannah Hercamp each produced two RBIs over the three games.
Chesterton defeated Columbus North 7-3 in the first round, Lucas, Hercamp and sophomore Tommi Stowers all posting doubles among 13 Bull Dog hits.
CN outlasted Rising Sun 8-7 in eight innings in a consolation semifinal game. Brooks tripled in the contest and added the game-winning RBI with a bunt single in the top of the eighth. The bunt brought Elizabeth Bell home with the decisive run.
Prall, Hercamp and sophomore Christine Bombardiere each had doubles against the Shiners, while senior Molly Crowe was the winning pitcher.
CN trailed 5-3 after six innings against Rising Sun, but the Bull Dogs rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the the seventh, the Shiners counted with two runs and had the bases loaded with no outs.
But Crowe struck out one batter, enduced a bouncer that resulted at the force out at the plate and a grounder to third to escape the jam without further damage.
That set the stage for the eighth, where Brooks bunted home Bell and Crowe set down the Shiners 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning for the win.
In the fifth-place game, South Bend Adams edged Columbus North 4-2. Brittany Martens had a double and a single for Adams (4-1), while Megan Bonk drove home two runs for the winners. A Harney double was a highlight in the game for the Bull Dogs.
Jennings County went 3-0 to win the tournament, beating Lake Central 2-0 in the championship game. Pendleton Heights topped Chesterton 6-2 in the third-place game. Madison-Grant edged Rising Sun 2-1 for seventh place.
At the JV level, Columbus North went 0-3 in the Floyd Central JV Invitational. The Bull Dogs lost 14-2 to Loogootee, 11-1 to Floyd Central and 18-3 to Jasper.
Columbus North returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 15) at Seymour.
