PERU, Ind. -- Michael VanDeventer held the individual lead late in the day, but two bad holes cost the Columbus North senior three strokes and he ended up third in the Hall of Fame Invitational at Rock Hollow Golf Club.
VanDeventer finished with a 2-over-par 74 over the 6,463-yard layout to lead the No. 1-ranked Bull Dogs to a team score of 324. That was good for a runner-up finish as No. 9 posted a 307 to win the 18-team competition.
Unranked Brownsburg placed third with a 329 followed by unranked Columbia City with a 330 and No. 7 Zionsville with a 333. No. 10 Floyd Central was sixth with a 335 followed by No. 8 Warsaw with a 337, No. 15 Bloomington South and unranked Crown Point with 339s and unranked Avon, unranked Mooresville and unranked Northridge with a trio of 345s.
Carmel's Jake Brown and Peru's Cameron Smith each fired a 72 to share the top spot on the leader board through 18 holes. Brown took medalist honors by winning a playoff.
VanDeventer, who was at 1-under through 16 holes, closed his round with a bogey on 17 and a double-bogey on 18 to finish two strokes behind the leaders on a day with temperatures in the mid 60s and a steady wind blowing from 20 mph to 35 mph.
Columbia City's Tyler Green placed fourth with a 75, while Zionsville's Adam Wood, Floyd Central's Jack Sparrow and Carmel's Kevin Stone tied for fifth with 77s. Brownsburg's Luke Kelly and Carmel's Jon Hicks shared eighth place with 78s.
Four other seniors joined VanDeventer in the CN lineup. Christian Fairbanks tied for 17th with an 82, Zack Lee tied for 22nd with an 83, Ian Coffey tied for 31st with an 85 and Nick Waskom tied for 45th with an 87.
Columbus North returns to action at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday (April 16) when it faces Providence and Jennings County in a three-team meet at Covered Bridge Golf Course in Sellersburg. CN follows by hosting Franklin Central at 4:30 p.m. Thursday (April 17) at Harrison Lake Country Club.
