Columbus North baseball sweeps Jennings County 6-3 and 20-2

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Sophomore Brice McDaniel and freshman Cooper Trinkle each had two hits Saturday (April 12), leading the Columbus North baseball team to a 6-3 victory over Jennings County in the opener of a doubleheader at Southside Elementary School.
The Bull Dogs moved to 3-0-1 in the second game by ripping 21 hits -- including a home run by junior Evan Finke and nine other extra-base hitts -- en route to a 20-2 rout in five innings to sweep the doubleheader.
In the opener, Junior Devin Mann and sophomore Canaan Baum each drove in two runs while junior Evan Finke and sophomore Collin Lollar each had one RBI for Columbus North.
CN took at 2-0 lead in the third inning. It pushed its edge to 3-0 in the fifth before Jennings County rallied to tie the game at 3 in the top of the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lollar doubled home one run and Mann doubled home two more as the Bull Dogs broke the deadlock and took the decision.
Junior Cody Burton pitched a complete game to claim the victory. He allowed five hits and struck out six while throwing 57 strikes among 85 pitches.
In the second game, Finke went 4-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs while Baum was 3-for-3 with a double and four RBIs as the Bull Dogs overwhelmed the Panthers.
Senior Will Dorenbusch went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs, while Burton was 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs in support of junior pitcher Jon Cox. Lollar and freshman Cooper Trinkle also went 2-for-3 in the second game.
Cox pitched a five-inning complete game, allowing just four hits while striking out three.
Columbus North jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and pushed its advantage to 7-0 in the second.
CN then exploded for 10 runs in the third as they batted around twice -- 18 hitters making plate appearances in the inning. Baum had a bases-loaded two-RBI double, Burton had a two-RBI double and Baum had a two-RBI single in the inning.
Finke uncorked his home run in the fourth inning, the first HR by a Columbus North player at the Bull Dogs' new field, a two-run shot over the left-field fence that drove in sophomore Ben Thompson. A double by senior Christian Glass drove in Dorenbusch for the final run of the day.
Columbus North returns to action at 5 p.m. Monday (April 14) when it hosts Hauser. CN follows by hosting Franklin at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday (April 15) and traveling to Shelbyville at 5:30 p.m. Thursday (April 17).
