Burton's triple helps Columbus North baseball beat East Central 11-5
April 12, 2014Columbus North High School
ST. LEON, Ind. -- Junior Cody Burton tripled home sophomore Brice McDaniel with the go-ahead run Friday (April 11), and the Columbus North baseball team went on to post an 11-5 victory at East Central.
Burton's drive to right field capped a two-run fifth inning as the Bull Dogs overcame a 5-4 deficit to post their first victory of the season.
McDaniel picked up the victory, allowing just two hits while striking out three in 3 1/3 innings of relief.
Junior Evan Finke went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and sophomore Canaan Baum was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs to pace a 14-hit attack for Columbus North (1-0-1).
Sophomore Collin Lollar went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, and sophomore Hunter Liggett went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI as CN broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning.
Columbus North overcame an early 1-0 deficit with a four-run second inning. Senior Will Dorenbusch opened the inning with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a ground out. Senior Christian Glass double, and Lollar followed with a double to score Glass. Junior Devin Mann walked, and Baum followed with a double to drive in Lollar and Mann.
The Trojans countered with two runs in the second and two more in the third for a 5-4 edge. But Columbus North took the lead in the fifth. Mann singled, stole second and scored on a Baum single. McDaniel reached on a fielder's choice, then he scored on Burton's triple.
The Bull Dogs ended all doubt in the sixth. Liggett opened the inning with a double, them moved to third on a passed ball before junior Josh Hogan drew a walk. Lollar then singled home Liggett, and a Mann sacrifice fly drove in Hogan. Baum and McDaniel each drew walks before a Burton sacrifice fly brought home Lollar. Finke then singled in Baum and freshman Cooper Trinkle, who had run for McDaniel.
Glass allowed five runs and four hits in the opening 3 2/3 innings. McDaniel notched the final out of the fourth inning, getting out of a bases-loaded situation, then pitched the final three innings to pick up the win.
East Central's Mitch Schuman was charged with the loss after allowing six runs and 10 hits over five innings. Ty Poindexter and Paul Oshuoghury each had two hits for the Trojans.
Columbus North returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 12) when it hosts Jennings County in a doubleheader at its diamond at Southside Elementary School.
