April 11, 2014Columbus North High School
The Columbus North boys golf team has moved to No. 1 in the state rankings released on Friday (April 11).
Ranked second in the preseason poll, the Bull Dogs shot a 298 last Saturday to win the season-opening Seymour Invitational. That performance vaulted CN past Westfield, the previous No. 1-ranked team and the defending state champion.
Columbus North was runner-up in last season's state finals.
At Seymour, senior Nick Waskom shot a 74 and took medalist honors by winning a playoff on the second extra hole. Seniors Michael VanDeventer and Christian Fairbanks also carded 74s. Senior Ian Coffey had a 76.
Westfield is second in the new poll followed by Hamilton Southeastern, Noblesville and Pendleton Heights. Fort Wayne Dwenger, Zionsville, Warsaw, Carmel and Floyd Central round out the top 10.
Columbus North returns to action at 10 a.m. Saturday (April 12) in the Hall of Fame Invitational at Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru.
The Bull Dogs follow with a three-team match on Wednesday (April 16) against Providence and Jennings County at Covered Bridge Golf Course in Sellersburg and a dual match on Thursday (April 17) against Franklin Central at Harrison Lake Country Club. CN competes in the Spring Preview event next Saturday (April 19) at The Legends of Indiana Golf Course in Franklin.
