Columbus North, Fishers play to 9-9 tie in baseball
April 11, 2014Columbus North High School
COLUMBUS, Ind -- Junior Devin Mann went 3-for-3 with a double on Thursday (April 10) as the Columbus North baseball team opened its new field at Southside Elementary School and a new season with a 9-9 tie.
The game in front of a large crowd was called a stalemate after six innings because of darkness.
Junior Cody Burton added two doubles, while junior Evan Finke and sophomore Canaan Baum each drove in two runs for the Bull Dogs (0-0-1).
CN had a chance to win in the bottom of the sixth with two on and one out. But with senior Will Dorenbusch on third and freshman Cooper Trinkle on first, sophomore Collin Lollar was unable to get a squeeze bunt attempt down and Dorenbusch was out at the plate on a 2-5-2 play.
Trinkle advanced to second on the play, but the inning -- and the game -- ended when Lollar struck out swinging.
Columbus North jumped to a 6-0 lead over the first four innings. The Bull Dogs scored twice in the second when Mann drove home Dorenbusch and sophomore Hunter Liggett with a two-RBI single.
The Bull Dogs extended the count to 6-0 in the fourth when they scored four runs on five consecutive hits -- a double by Mann, a double by Baum, a single by Brice McDaniel, a double by Burton and a two-RBI single by Finke.
Fishers reached the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth inning, but Columbus North countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame for a 9-2 advantage. Liggett singled, two hit batsman, a walk and a Burton single accounted for the burst.
The Tigers (6-0-1) exploded for seven runs on nine hits in the sixth against two CN relief pitchers. That tied the game at 9 entering the bottom of the sixth when umpires declared that half inning would be the final half inning because of impending darkness.
Lollar allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts in five innings pitched for the Bull Dogs. Burton gave up seven runs on seven hits in 1/3 of an inning, while McDaniel allowed two hits in 2/3 of an inning.
Brandon Yoho went 4-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs for Fishers. Griffin Hulecki went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBIs for the Tigers.
Columbus North returns to action at 6 p.m. Friday (April 11) when it visits East Central. The Bull Dogs follow by hosting Jennings County in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 12) at the Southside Field.
