COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Senior Denisa Brooks went 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs on Thursday (April 8) as Columbus North exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to rally for a 6-3 softball victory over Shelbyville at Northside Middle School.
The Bull Dogs (1-1) trailed 3-1 after 5 1/2 innings, but they combined some timely hits with a Shelbyville error for the big inning.
Senior Molly Crowe opened the decisive burst with a single, and junior Kelsay Lucas followed with a double to left field. Senior Shannah Hercamp loaded the bases when she reached on an error, and senior Grayson Harney drove in Crowe with a fielder's-choice grounder.
Sophomore Katie Prall then singled home Lucas, and Brooks followed with a two-RBI single to right field. Junior Sheana Wasilewski sacrificed Brooks to second, and sophomore Christine Bombardiere then singled to center to drive in Brooks.
Brooks helped Columbus North take a 1-0 lead in the third inning. She bunted for a single. Brooks then took off for second and, when Wasilewski laid down a sacrifice bunt, streaked to third. When the Golden Bears first baseman threw past the third baseman, Brooks dashed home and slid in safely.
Shelbyville recovered for a 2-1 lead in the fourth when it combined three doubles and a single. The Golden Bears then made it 3-1 in the top of the sixth with a double and a single.
But CN put together its comeback in the bottom of the sixth and, despite Shelbyville advancing two runners to second and third, held the visitors scoreless in the seventh to complete the win.
Crowe pitched a complete game to improve her record to 1-1 in the circle. She allowed 10 hits and hit one batter while striking out five.
At the JV level, junior Alex Luse had three hits and freshman Madisyn Prince struck out 12 as Columbus North prevailed 9-2.
The Columbus North varsity returns to action at 11 a.m. Saturday (April 12) when it faces Chesterton in the first-round of the Pendleton Heights Invitational. The Bull Dogs will play three games in the event. The Bull Dogs' JV plays in the Floyd Central Invitational starting at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
