Columbus North boys golf wins Seymour Invitational

SEYMOUR, Ind. -- Senior Nick Waskom shot a 2-over-par 74 and took medalist honors in a playoff Saturday (April 5), leading the Columbus North boys golf team to the championship of the Seymour Invitational.
The second-ranked Bull Dogs had four players shoot 76 or better in amassing a team score of 298, 26 strokes better than runner-up Columbus East in the season-opening event at Shadowood Golf Course.
Brownstown Central placed third with a 349, and the Braves were followed by Batesville with a 350, Jennings County with a 353, Bedford North Lawrence with a 355 and Bloomington North with a 360 in the nine-team competition.
Waskom shot a 38-36 over the 5,600-yard layout to tie Bloomington North's Ian Bailey as well as teammates Michael VanDeventer and Christian Fairbanks for individual honors over 18 holes. All four players parred the first extra hole, and Waskom captured the blue ribbon when he parred the second extra hole and his three competitors each had a bogey.
Senior Ian Coffey shot a 76 to complete CN's top four, while junior Kyung Kim rounded out the lineup with an 86.
"The conditions were pretty difficult, especially early, but Nick and all the guys battled throughout the day," Bull Dogs coach Doug Bieker said. "Nick birdied his second-to-last hole to get into the playoff, so that was good. He was in a playoff last season with Michael in the sectional. Michael won that one, but Nick learned from that. They all hit some good shots, and Nick happened to come out on top this time."
The coach also had praise for Fairbanks, VanDeventer and Coffey.
"Christian sank a 25-foot putt on last hole to get into playoff, so to make a long one was good for him," Bieker said. "Michael struggled a bit with ball striking, but he chipped and putted well. Sometimes you show how good you are by scoring when you don't hit the well.
"Ian didn't get a lot of time with the varsity last year, so for him to post a 76 in first time with first team, that is a good start to his season. It should give him confidence moving forward, and we need that."
Bieker said his team's 298 may have been the Bull Dogs' best score throughout his tenure in the season-opening event.
"I'm never complete satisfied, but we had a good day," he said. "I'm thrilled with where we are, and I hope our guys keep pushing each other. Our goal is to get back to state and to try to win it again. We played well, and we'll see if we can keep the momentum next week."
The Bull Dogs are back in action at 10 a.m. next Saturday (April 12) when they compete in the Hall of Fame Invitational at Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru.
