Columbus North wins gymnastics sectional

COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Freshman Ashley Holliday won three events and the all-around Friday night (March 7), leading the Columbus North gymnastics team to the championship of the Columbus East Sectional.
The Bull Dogs amassed a season-best 109.750 points to win the 11-team competition that was held in the Orange Pit. Bloomington South placed second with 105.450 points and Columbus East was third with 104.925 points, and those two teams will join CN in the Columbus East Regional at 7 p.m. next Friday (March 14).
The sectional title was the second in a row and the 15th overall for the Bull Dogs. CN previously has won sectional trophies in 1973, 1974, 1977, 1978, 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1999, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
Holliday totaled a 36.925 score to take the all-around crown. She excelled on balance beam with a 9.350, on uneven parallel bars with a 9.325 and on vault with a 9.300 to capture event blue ribbons. Holliday also placed 11th on floor exercise with an 8.950.
Sophomore Katrina May shined in three events for the Bull Dogs. She was second on bars and vault, scoring a 9.250 in both events. May also tied for second place on beam, scoring yet another 9.250 mark and sharing that spot with Columbus East's Becca Bryan. May, coming off an injury, competed in only three events.
CN senior Megan Heathcote captured the other event crown, taking the floor with a score of 9.500. She also placed tied for fourth on bars (8.750), placed 19th on vault (8.450) and was 27th on beam (7.725). That gave Heathcote an all-around score of 34.425, good for eighth place.
Junior Kaitlyn Barnes placed seventh in the all-around with a mark of 34.450. She tied for sixth place on on floor (9.175) to highlight her evening. Barnes also was eighth on vault (8.750), ninth on beam (8.900) and 21st on bars (7.625).
Junior Tristan Gregg completed the CN lineup, placing 20th on floor with an 8.550.
Columbus North, Bloomington South and Columbus East will be joined by the top three teams from the Connersville Sectional in the regional competition. The Bull Dogs will be seeking their 13th regional crown, their last one coming in 2011.
The top three teams from the regional will advance to the IHSAA State Finals on March 22 at Ball State's Worthen Arena in Muncie.
