Columbus North boys basketball beats Shelbyville 67-50 in sectional opener

    SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- Senior Elliott Welmer scored 16 of his game-high 20 points in the first half Tuesday evening (March 4), leading the Columbus North boys basketball team to a 67-50 victory over Shelbyville in the first round of Class 4A Sectional 14 at Shelbyville.
    Junior Josh Speidel chipped in 13 points for the Bull Dogs, who improved to 20-5 and advanced to a sectional semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday (March 7) against Bloomington North (12-8). Senior Evan Henry contributed 12 points, while junior Trent Larson had 11 points for the winners.
    Junior Cameron Clouse netted a team-high 14 points and senior Adam Eads tallied 11 points for the Golden Bears (9-12).
    Welmer scored nine points and Henry scored seven points in the first quarter as Columbus North raced to a 23-12 lead. Welmer and Speidel each tossed in seven points in the second period as the Bull Dogs pushed their advantage to 39-20 at the half.
    Eads scored five points and Clouse had four points as Shelbyville used a 1-3-1 defense to claw back into the game in the third quarter, cutting its deficit to 51-39 at the third stop.
    Two Clouse buckets and two John Lux free throws pulled the Bears to within 51-45 early in the fourth quarter, but CN's Henry responded with a three-point play to push the margin back to nine at 54-45.
    A Speidel bucket, a Larson free throw and a Welmer short jumper made it 59-47, and then junior Kooper Glick, Larson and Speidel each sank two free throws as the Bull Dogs sealed the decision.
    Columbus East defeated East Central 61-44 in in the other first-round game on Tuesday. The Olympians (17-4) advanced to the second semifinal on Friday against Bloomington South (14-7). East Central finished its season with a 9-14 record.
    The semifinal winners will square off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (March 8) in the sectional final.
