INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Cody Taylor set a state record in one event, placed second in another event and helped two relays to runner-up finishes Saturday (March 1), leading the Columbus North boys swimming team to a fourth-place finish in the IHSAA State Finals.
Senior Sam Loescher also produced two top-five finishes for the Bull Frogs, who totaled 133 points as a team.
Chesterton won the team title with 240 points. Avon was second with 198 followed by Penn with 187 and Columbus North. Carmel was fifth with 124, while Bloomington South (115), Hamilton Southeastern (109), Northridge (107), Zionsville (105) and Fort Wayne Carroll (84) rounded out the top 10.
The team crown was the second in a row for the Trojans and their fourth in seven seasons.
Taylor successfully defended his championship in the 100-yard breaststroke, winning in a state-record time of 54.24 seconds. That broke the record of 54.56 he set in the preliminaries on Friday. On Friday, Taylor broke a mark of 54.82 set by Tyler Lemert of Fort Wayne Concordia in 2007.
Taylor also was runner-up in the 200 individual medley in 1:48.35. Chesterton senior Blake Pieroni, the defending champion, won that race in 1:46.83.
Loescher placed fourth in the 100 free in 45.87 and fifth in the 50 free in 21.09. Pieroni became a third-time champion in the former race in 43.81, while Zionsville junior Kyle DeCoursey captured the latter dash in 20.59.
Two Columbus North relays also posted second-place efforts.
The 400 free relay of Loescher, junior Matt Freudenthaler, sophomore Chase McQueen and Taylor finished in 3:07.27, behind only Chesterton's 3:01.65.
Taylor, Freudenthaler, McQueen and Loescher teamed for a 1:25.05 clocking in the 200 free relay. That mark tied with an Evansville Memorial quartet for second place, less than a half second behind Penn's winning time of 1:24.65.
Taylor's state record was one of four set Saturday. Chesterton senior Aaron Whitaker set two records, 46.31 in the 100 butterfly and 47.06 in the 100 backstroke in defending his titles in both events. He also was joined by Jack Waller, Pieroni and Gary Kostbade in setting a mark of 1:29.64 in the 200 medley relay.
Two additional records set Friday withstood Saturday's swims. Pieroni won the 100 free title but had a faster time of 43.52 in the preliminaries. The Chesterton 400 free relay prevailed Saturday, but it had a better mark of 2:59.36 in the prelims.
Other state champions included Avon junior Parks Jones in the 200 free (1:37.11), Hamilton Southeastern senior Cody Coldren in diving (536.20) and Penn junior Bowen Anderson in the 500 (4:25.01).
Pieroni was chosen winner of the Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award. Pieroni owns a 3.87 grade-point average and is a member of National Honor Society, Campus Life, Interact Club, Spanish Club and Student Athletic Council. He will attend Indiana University on a swimming scholarship and study biology.
