INDIANAPOLIS -- Senior Cody Taylor set a state-meet record while qualifying first in the 100-yard breaststroke Friday evening (Feb. 28), leading the Columbus North boys swimming team in the preliminaries of the IHSAA State Finals.
Taylor, the defending state champion, was timed in 54.56 seconds to earn the top seed for the championship final on Saturday (March 1) at the Natatorium at IUPUI. That broke the state-meet mark of 54.82 set by Tyler Lemert of Fort Wayne Concordia in 2007.
Taylor also qualified third in the 200 individual medley, while teammate Sam Loescher earned spots in the 50 free and 100 free finals. In addition, the Bull Frogs' 200 free relay and 400 free relay also will compete in championship finals.
Taylor took the No. 3 spot in the 200 IM with a time of 1:49.88. Chesterton senior Blake Pieroni claimed the top seed with a mark of 1:46.78. Columbus North sophomore Chase McQueen was 32nd in 1:57.64.
Loescher qualified fifth in the 50 free in 21.13 and fourth in the 100 free in 45.64. Zionsville junior Kyle DeCoursey captured the No. 1 seed in the 50 in 20.65. Pieroni was the fast qualifier in the 100 in a state-record 43.52.
The CN 200 free relay of Taylor, junior Matt Freudenthaler, McQueen and Loescher collected the No. 5 seed with a time of 1:25.85. A Penn quartet was No. 1 in 1:24.73.
Freudenthaler, McQueen, Taylor and Loescher combined for the fifth spot in the 400 free relay in 3:08.31. A foursome from Chesterton set a state record of 2:59.36 in seizing the No. 1 slot.
Freudenthaler also competed in two individual events. He placed 27th in the 200 free in 1:45.12. He also was 27th in the 100 butterfly in 52.51. The respective top qualifiers in those events were Avon junior Parks Jones in 1:37.29 and Chesterton senior Aaron Whitaker in a state-record 46.61.
Other top qualifiers included Whitaker in the 100 backstroke in 47.31, Penn junior Bowen Anderson in the 500 free in 4:27:05 and the Chesterton 200 medley relay in a state record 1:30.65.
Consolation finals and championship finals begin at 1 p.m. Saturday (March 1).
