CN's Jones earns spot in IHSAA wrestling State Finals

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- Senior Andrew Jones qualified for the IHSAA wrestling State Finals, highlighting the efforts of the Columbus North wrestling team on Saturday (Feb. 15) in the Evansville Semistate.
Jones went 2-2 to finish in fourth place in the 152-pound weight class to earn his ticket to the state meet next Friday and Saturday (Feb. 21-22) at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
Seniors Cody Speaker, Luke Teague and Kenny King also represented the Bull Dogs in the semistate, but they each dropped first-round matches and saw their seasons come to a conclusion.
As a team, CN tied for 23rd in the semistate with 8.0 points. Franklin won the competition with 94.0 points. The Grizzly Cubs were followed by Evansville Mater Dei with 86.5, Bloomington South with 50.0, Avon with 49.0 and Edgewood with 39.5. Rounding out the top 10 were Madison with 38.0, Evansville Central with 33.0 and a three-way tie for eighth between Ben Davis, Danville and Evansville Reitz with 31.5.
Jones won his first two matches to punch his ticket to Indianapolis. Jones opened by pinning Owen Valley senior William Newforth at the 2:46 mark. He followed with another pin, dropping Mt. Vernon (Posey) senior Dane Wilson at 2:00.
In the semifinals, Brownsburg sophomore C.J. Damler prevailed with a 15-0 technical fall over Jones. Then in the third-place match, Martinsville senior Seth Ferguson defeated Jones 10-2. Jones will take a 36-10 record to the state meet.
At 126 pounds, Jasper senior Nathan Schitter pinned Speaker at 2:27. Speaker completed his season with a 25-14 record.
At 182 pounds, Evansville Mater Dei junior Sam Bassemier defeated Teague 3-0. Teague ended his year with a 28-10 mark.
At 285 pounds, Ben Davis junior Norman Oglesby beat King 7-3. King closed his season at 28-19.
Jones next will compete in the IHSAA State Finals on Friday (Feb. 21) in a first-round match against a semistate winner. First-round losers are eliminated, while first-round winners return to compete on Saturday (Feb. 22) to determine the final eight places of each weight class.
