CN's Speidel chosen as Player of the Week
January 11, 2014Columbus North High School
Columbus North junior Josh Speidel has been named a Player of the Week by two organizations.
Speidel's most recent honor is the MainSource Player of the Week as chosen by the Indiana SportsTalk radio show. Earlier, Speidel was selected the IBCA/Subway Player of the Week for boys' District 3.
A 6-8 junior, Speidel was recognized for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 4 after he collected the MVP award and led the Bull Dogs to the championship of the Bob Wettig Memorial Tournament in Richmond -- CN's third consecutive crown in the 16-team event and Speidel's second MVP honor in three seasons.
In leading Columbus North to a 4-0 week, Speidel averaged 20.3 points and 10.5 rebounds as the Bull Dogs defeated Indianapolis Tindley 78-27, Bedford North Lawrence 75-54, Fort Wayne North 59-54 and host Richmond 81-60.
Speidel's game-by game breakdown in helping the Bull Dogs improve to 9-2 for the season included 16 points and 11 rebounds against Tindley, 16 and eight against BNL, 25 and 11 against Fort Wayne North and 24 and 12 against Richmond. Over four games, he was 29-of-44 from the field, 3-of-11 on 3-pointers and 20-of-26 on free throws.
Others chosen as IBCA Players of the Week this week were Indianapolis Tech senior Trey Lyles, Northridge senior Nate Ritchie, Fort Wayne Canterbury senior Kindell Fincher, Indianapolis Scecina senior Shannon Gavaghan and West Washington senior Shana Keller.
This is the second time that Speidel has been chosen an IBCA Player of the Week. He also was chosen once in the 2011-12 season.
